I have a 1.8 and it tops at 169kmph (auto). In regards to the octane levels not effecting the cars performance, that is not true. If you read the owners manual it says to not get gas that has less than 91 octane and no methanol/ less than 10% ethanol. This is because it is from Japan where the lowest octane you can get at the pumps is like 99. It will screw up your ECU if you constantly run on 87/86 octane, not to mention that it feels nice to care for your car.
My car has been run on regular for the 40,000 km that I've had it, and most likely for the entire 200,000+ KM of its life the ECU is fine. How exactly will the octane number of you gas screw up your ECU of all things?
that sounds more like a load of **** if you ask me.

All I can say is what was in my manual. It had one of those stupid warning boxes that said do not fill up with less than 91 octane. Doing so could effect the ECU.

170 km/h

This weekend when driving home alone, i actually got the car up to 170km/h on a straight away. (took advantage of the empty highway at 6am). It was a bit cool in the morning which might have helped.

Hey,
out of curiousity, what's the top speed of a 1998 protege, 1.5L. 5 speed manual (no freakin tach).
I can get mine up to 160km/h (100mph) and that's it, it doesn't want to go anymore.
And i have no idea what the rpm is up there either. But it doesn't sound that bad. Is it the govenor (limit) or am i way up there with the rpm?? But that's where it wants to stop.. please help..
also, i can get 4th gear up to 130 (did it today) but then the 5th can only give me an additional 30 km/h??
what's up with dat? (the hurricane, WWE)
thnx
Your not hitting anything it's just it's as fast as it can go with the wind resistance my 1997 Mazda Protege LX 1.5l can go about 105-110mph(wind makes a huge differance if your talking about 1 or 2 mph in such a light car) i wouldn't worry about hitting the rev limiter when you do top speed runs in 5th i had about 2and a half grand left

yeah, i know about the rev limiter

Thnx for the input about the room i have. I realized last week about the rev limiter. I was playin around with a buddy and his Geo Storm, and i was pushin second gear i dont' know what i got up to but all of a sudden it just died, (hit the rev limiter) and it just cut the gas on me. Pretty scary, but with no tach it's kinda hard to know, i was about to shift but it was to late. OOPS! So, i realized that it wasn't the rev limiter. But thnx for the input.

the rev limiter is about 6700 although since you have no tach it really doesn't do you much good in second gear that takes you up to like 60mph

BTW, tachs are very easy to install for all you non-tachies. Just pickup a nice black sunpro 2" dial or something for 30 bucks and wire it to the distributor control wiring harness. There's an empty pin on non-tech equiped vehicles for you to plug a tach into. You need to them ground your tach (to the battery or frame, not the distributor) and run any +12v sources for lighting the tach or any other options it has. A hole must be drilled behind the steering wheel, no biggie, tachs come with grommets to fill it in.
