what's the Top speed

Hey,
out of curiousity, what's the top speed of a 1998 protege, 1.5L. 5 speed manual (no freakin tach).
I can get mine up to 160km/h (100mph) and that's it, it doesn't want to go anymore.
And i have no idea what the rpm is up there either. But it doesn't sound that bad. Is it the govenor (limit) or am i way up there with the rpm?? But that's where it wants to stop.. please help..
also, i can get 4th gear up to 130 (did it today) but then the 5th can only give me an additional 30 km/h??
what's up with dat? (the hurricane, WWE)
thnx

Same deal here,
Ive only had mine about 100mph
But I have an aftermarket tach and its running around 4000rpm
So it seems there would be more there.

when I had my 14" rims / factory intake / exhaust / 2 people in the car. I hit 110 mph ... that was my top in 4th gear..

when I had my 16" rims/Ractive/Civic/intake// exhaust/ me only in car. I hit 115mph ...

about 2 years at Carlisle on that highway(forgot the name) I had run super gasoline all the way from new york to PA..(for what that's worth) I hit 120mph and it was still climbing.. still had 16" rims/ Racitve intake/ exhaust...

Got rid of the 16's . and put on the 13" rims(factory).... with the R1 exhaust/ractive intake.. I would tend to hit 115 pretty easy without an effort... stints to 100mph were not out the ordinary...

and this was done on a clutch with over 100k on it

I have hit 115mph, going down the hill, as for the straights, I think it was close to 110mph, and the engine sounded like it had a few more revs in there.

murcielago August-6th-2003 02:58 PM

just as i expected.

Thnx for the feed back guyz.
i thought there might be something wrong or something. My old car could go up to 200km/h until it got up to redline. (corolla gts) But thnx. Now we just have to find out how to fix that. Make it faster.. thnx..

I don't think there is anything wrong with your car. It could depend on your area .. such as temps/elev
ation/ and so forth

I have had mine goin 125... its a 96.. but I was going like 110 then went down a hill to get the extra 15... on the the way up i went down to around 105 or so and stopped at 110 when it was flat again...

First off, running 16 inch wheels on a car with that came with 14 inch wheels will offset the speedo by about 5 mph.

Second, Runing premium (high octane fuel) is pretty pointless unless you are in a forced induction setup. The higher the octane, the slower the fuel burns. If your car has a knock sensor it senses engine knock from low octane and retards the cars timing to account for it, but if does not sense high octane and turn the timing up.

The only point of high octane fuel is if you advance the timing yourself, or if you are running boost because you need to let the fuel burn slow enough to consume the extra air in the cylinder.

Oh, on a side note. My Automatic protege lx doesn't feel to happy going above 90 and the tach was at 5k. My MX-6 however will pull hard right about 150, which is were I redline in 5th. I love forced induction :)

That depends on the overall rolling diameter of the wheel, if its the same then it won't affect anything.

FlySwat August-6th-2003 06:01 PM

True, but look at Bruce's picture and tell me the rolling diameter is the same :)

Bruce95fmla August-6th-2003 06:09 PM

yeah look at that picture that was at an angle,
the tires were 205/45/16 ..

don't go buy the photo please...

my tach was not off .. don't ask how I know

going on a straight away flat with only slight curves, I hit about 111 before backing off for a pocket of traffic. Took the freaking longest time, but it felt nice, seemed to grip the road ok and all, even with windy conditions. This was in 5th, probly the reason it took forever, but I was getting about 5.5K RPMs out of the engine.

i have done nothing to my 96 protege's engine.... and i can reach 115 just going down the highway.... it will reach about 116 and won't go any higher unless I go down a hill

Took a while to get up that fast, but I bet she can do more. I'll test her on my next trip to Minnnesota

FlySwat August-7th-2003 10:45 PM

Hehe, I can hit 100+ in a 1/4 miles time :)

In the mx6 :)
