i would think the wheel base might be too short...but it may not be all that different than an AE86...

I drifted in my '90 SE a couple of times....a full 360 across 3 mainlanes on I35E north of Dallas...totally by accident....lotsa smoke.

miata's have that 50/50 weight distribution, it may be harder to maintain a drift with them than with the 240? just my guess.

anyway, yeah, it's fairly hard to get a fwd to drift on purpose for extended amounts of time without some pretty specific setup and tweaking.

Here's a quick short clip (7mb) of me drifting around Gingerman Raceway turn 11 in my wagon. It was rainy and it was a sharp turn at fairly high speed, but still, it was pretty fun!
