car pulls hard but idles rough ????

well after i did my swap i replaced everything (major tune up) i did check the timing too and fix it. heres the problem. as i was dring to work about 7 miles down the freeway my car hesitated big time . everytime i step on the gas pedal the car will slow down so i down shifted and then i heard the enigne was stil on but when i stepped on the gas again it hesitated again and sounded like the engine turned off but it didn't.
i kinda figured i was running rich so i adjusted my spark plug gap from .041" to .042" and noticed that the plugs is black (carbon dep.) i had to advance my timing to 2degree so that i'll run a lil lean. now my car dont die on me but at idle ( the last line b4 the 1k rpm) its rought but not as rough as missfiring . does anyone know what the heck this is?????

what grade of gas might you be using? a timing advance i thought was indicative of you actually using a higher octane fuel, and nothing less (91 octane in other words is what you should be using).
peace
