I have 98 Protege with 61k miles on it. I have changed the plugs which I think is the only thing for a tune-up. However, it has been idling very roughly. I have also increased the idle speed manually on the thruttle body, but it seems like the computer is compensating for it and still runs very rough. Furthermore, I thought the engine was supposed to rev up when AC was on, but the only difference is it runs even worse at idle when AC is on. sometimes I even have to turn off the ac while i'm at a light to keep everything from shaking. Once the rpm hits about 900, it smooths out and I have no problems with it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Clean the throttle body. Get a can of cleaner, a thoothbrush, remove the air intake hose, and have at it.

It's part of my tune up routine now.

if it dosent get fix by cleaning it there might be a bit bigger one..try your IAC..idle air control..or i think its ICV..idle contol valve...

what kind of cleaner can you use? Just typical degreaser?
