Alright. The question is can you get a ticket for illegal tint in a state different from the state the car is registered in. My car is registered in GA under my dad's name and I drive it in NY with a NY license for the time being. I have 20 percent tint which is illegal in Georgia as well as New York, which i do know. However i was told by the tint people that you can't get a ticket for illegal tint outside of the state the car is registered for because different states have different laws for tint. Unfortunately, today i did get a citation for the illegal tint because the cop i guess checked for GA's tint legality. Who is right here? It is a dumb reason for the cop to give me the ticket just for tints but I just want to know who is right. I know the cop was just doing her job but I got pulled over at one of those checkpoints and saw other cars with dark tints pass by. Just my luck eh? anyone know about tint laws? What should i do about the citation?

I think its BS.....just show up for court....I do NOT believe an officer of NY can inforce a law from another state....its OUT OF THEIR JURISDICTION. just like if you were to run across the state line while speeding....they can call ahead and have the troopers from the next state pick you up and get your butt....but they can't follow you across and apprehend you in another state.

while I was in the service I drove my car in many states other than the one in which it was registered....in MY state its required to get a saftey inspection EVERY YEAR.....I never got one while out of state for FOUR years....and never had a problem....

the thing with tint....its a lot more noticable than an expired saftey inspection sticker on a windsheild.....

I think if I were YOU....I would talk to a lawyer......I believe the ticket is bogus...

you most certanily can, for instance im in the military, so i trravel alot i had a truck that was lifted with big tires, the tires stuck out alittle from the wheel wells. the truck had connecticut plates, im stationed in maine now, and was pulled over in maine, the law states that you have to adhear to all maine laws while you are there. and that goes for all states. no matter what state your in you have to adhear to their laws, be it window tint, or big tires.
you might be able to fight it, but dont get your hopes up.

Thanks Sir Nuke and THEGOLDPRO for your replies. The thing is i would rather not speak to a lawyer only because it costs money and i don't know any. It is only a ticket for tint and not like I'm getting points off for it on my license(at least I don't think so). The officer did pull me over and the first question was where i was from and where the car is registered. then she went back to her car and after a few minutes came back with a tint meter and said the tint is not legal here NOR in GA. I do think that it's one of those BS tickets but If the fact is I CAN get a ticket for it in a different state then i will pay the ticket. Any lawyers out there?

you dont need to go to a lawyer, just contest the ticket. all you will have to do is convince the prosicuter. and seeing how you wern't speeding or anything, it shouldn't be a big deal.

really the BIG difference is if you are LIVING in that state...or just traveling through it... ... there is a difference.

well he did say he has a new york license, yeah the car was regestered in ga, but hes living in new york, with a new york license.

yup i currently live in new york and have a NY license. BUT since it's "technically" not my car, am i held liable for it? i mean if say i got pulled over for a broken tailight for example, Who has to pay the ticket, the owner of the car or the person that was driving it?

the driver......no different than if you had a rental car.....if you are opperating a motor vehicle on the road...YOU are responsible for it meeting the proper standards.

hey....if this car is TECHNICALLY registered to your dad....and HE lives in Ga....and YOU are only driving it TEMPORARILY....as in the car is going back to Ga to your dad.....you could take this to the judge...explain that its NOT your car....you are only using it with the permission of your father.....he MAY let you off...then again...he may not.....its a chance you will have to decide if you want to take or not.
