buying a protege 5, looking for suggestions...

Hi everyone,

I am looking at getting a Protege 5 very soon. I kind of wish the P5 had a little more power, but I will probably add at least an intake. I live in Maryland, and I will probably order it through a dealer who is going to order it directly from Mazda.

So I am looking at getting the midnight blue with ABS, 6-disc, floor mats, moonroof, and the dimming mirror. Now I am considering the security system, but a dealer said they tend to be sensitive. Could anyone give me some insight about that? Also I was looking through some of the postings and someone suggested getting a bumper guard, is it worth it? Can anyone suggest anything else? I appreciate any insight.

Thanks,
Jordan

Jordan,
I read somewhere that it's best not to get the factory alarm....something about it messes up the electrical system(can cause problems). I requested my P5 without it. From what I've read from other people, they suggest an after market alarm...such as a Viper or something like that. I haven't gotten one yet(only had my P5 a few weeks not), but most likely will in the future.
As for the bumperguard....I guess it depends on how much and how you will be utilizing your hatch. Some people that use it alot for say, loading unloading bikes, strollers, etc.....like to have it to save from scratching the bumper. I personally don't have a great need for it. So, it varies from person to person I'd say.
Good luck,
sharon

The bumper guard would be an excellent investment. I just ordered one myself. Even though I don't carry much, the few times I do load or unload things I find myself resting the object on the bumper until I can get a better grip. Some scratches are already present. Other than that just enjoy the car.

See if you can find a P5 that has the bumper guard installed first to make sure you like the way it looks. I was thinking about getting one myself until I saw it on another P5. It's one of those 'matter of personal taste' add-ons.

One accessory I'd definitely recommend is the trunk cargo tray (not the cargo mat, which is different). It's a thick plastic tray with a lip on it, so things that are wet, dirty or sandy don't mess up the trunk carpeting. Very practical.

The only thing I would suggest doing different is not getting the 6 disc from the dealer. As many will agree the stock stereo sucks and to spend another 500 on it is not the best way to invest that money. Unless you want a stock look. You could buy a nice 5 disc in dash and walk away alot happier. Just my .02

Not to beat a dead horse, ....

I had actually gone out and purchased the Rear Bumper Guard. The issue that I had with it is, ... it did NOT extend all the way to the rubber gasket that the hatch seals against. i.e. there is a gap between the rear (as you're facing the hatch) of the Bumper Guard and the part of the bumper that starts heading upwards.

I had purchased the bumper guard, because I had noticed stone dust (yardwork) gathering in the crease of the bumper, and there is/was no good way of getting it out of there (hard to hose out, because you can't see it without the door open, and didn't want to hose it out with the door open.).

I have been contemplating (just haven't gotten off my duff to do it) contacting a RhinoLiner or other spray in bed liner in my area to see if they could spray a portion of the bumper, ... I'll let you know how that goes.
