BP Reliability Issues....
#3
I'm finding a lot of 1st Gens (SOHC and DOHC both) that have well over 100K on the engines, and are still going strong. 140K seems pretty common. I've found a few with 160K and more, and don't seem to be showing any signs of death.

NADA...ZIP...NONE?
the ONLY 'MECHANICAL' thing ON the engine that i've had to replace was the thermostat at like 15K under warranty; the replacement has lasted me 180K; and even my clutch is still original...but not for long
oh yeah, and the water pump - at the last timing belt service...

Burn oil
The only problem these thing have over time is oil comsumption. Between 90K-100K, they start to need about 1qt every 3000 miles, maybe a little more. If you live in a colder climate, it's a little worse cause of the valve seals contracting. Once the engine warms up, it's fine.
In all honesty, this isn't even really as problem. Just figured you'd want to know everything. I have 110K on my 92 LX 5-speed. I just drove it to Florida and back from Ohio. Ran like a champ, no problems at all. Didn't even have to add any oil. I replaced my distributor at 80K, that was the only problem I've had, and I race that bitch all the time.

I've only run into a few slight problems with the BP line of motors. On my old N/A at about 135k the timing belt went out, then the water pump took a dive. Still good mileage for those items...
Had a problem with the first BPT, seemed to be a water pump issue...then a really lean issue running without the right electronics.... that one melted
Other problems were minor, mostly the rest of the car related.

I have driven from LA to Montreal 6 times, AZ 4, Sf a bunch of times and CO twice, have 104K and i've changed 3 things, radiator, power steering pump and my alternator. I've owned it since it was 4 months old and i drive THE **** out of it. Also, the last 4 months i have raced it every other weekend or so....It still wants more...but i too have the slow controlled oil leak....LOL
out of the 6 (real) cars i've owned, it's been the BEST.

its interesting there is a Technical Service Bulletin specifically about the DRIVER's side mirror! #SO1121 from MAR 91....
Found that out from www.alldata.com ...they have a lot of other TSB's you may findintresting as well...have no idea what it says, though, 'cause you have to sign up to read them.
