Axle replacements

For those who had replaced axles, were they brand new or reconditioned? What kind of warranty did they come with? where did you get them and how much? Thanks

Most of the bigger auto parts chains carry remanufactured axles. And most of them offer lifetime warranties, although the boots usually aren't covered. Cost is about $55-75US. New halfshafts can be bought some places for about 2-3 times that. But the remans are made with new parts. With autocrossing, I only get about 60-70k out of the boots, so I've done quite a few replacements.

Ok..ya I thought that my axles wore out too fast but I guess for remans the life span is way shorter. I didn't even get 60000 km on mine before they crapped out. Can anyone post pics of their driveshafts? Thanks

So is it safe to assume that everyone who has replaced their axles are remans?

I got 66k and 70k miles out of my OE boots. I replaced the boots with aftermarkets, and they both ripped at 130k miles. Figuring 130k miles was pretty good for half-shafts, I replaced them with remans. The driver's side had a defective boot (flaw in the mold) and ripped in about 15k miles. I replaced that boot. The passenger side boot ripped at 184k miles (5+ years), and I was never happy with that axle (too tight) so I got new one.

But I don't think that the remans (at least the good ones) are that much worse than the OEs. And definitely much cheaper.

i replaced my OE driver axle at around 102k with an Autozone reman, and now the passenger side is going to get done ASAP at 112K and again, i'll use a reman. Heck for $65 + a refundable $45 core charge, it's a great deal and it's not all that hard to change in the driveway either.

I have a How-To on the replacement, but look for the passenger side in the next few weeks

here's a juicy pic

Boot? what boot? there's no boot....what are you talking aboot!?

right there, there should be a rubber boot there!

Where? (dum di dum, daaa, dum di dum)

right here >>>>>

OH, you mean the place i've been shoving grease in when it starts to make that creaking and knocking noise...?

you a$$hole!!!!!!

that is a good how-to Wil, you learn well grasshopper forgot you had that up.

but, dude, too much work... no need to undo the sway bar, or the ball joint, or remove the intermediate shaft...which means no fluid drain.
