92 Lx

One of my younger friends is picking up a 92 Protege LX 5speed for free, it has 280,000km's on it though, but it was well taken care off and the owner (friends uncle) has never had a problem with it besides basic oilchanges etc kinda stuff.

What is it going to have for an engine, i'm guessing 1.8L. Did some of pro's from these years come with a turbo?
We have alot planned for this car, such as tearing the motor apart and doing heads cams pistons, and or a turbo if we can get the right parts, his cash and my time sync'd.

Anything he should know beforehand?

It has a 1.8L DOHC engine...no turbos. Though it may be possible to import a GTX engine with a turbo.

Some information about those might be here.

Also do a search, I'm sure you'll find plenty of information.

EDIT: ERRR you probably have a SOHC engine as it sounds like you are in Canada. (Thanks ron s).

If its the DOHC, you can get the intake and exhaust manifolds to put a turbo on, but with that kind of milage, I would swap for a GTX 1.8L turbo, w/ 180 hp. Braden at barely legal transplants, or the guys at www.corksport.com are good places to start, and there is a mazda shop in Toronto or something called A-spec that could really help as well (sorry, dont remember their website).

Sweet, yeah i looked at corksport or BLT, can't remember at the 180hp engine, he is really interested in that and is currently saving for it now.

With the J spec 180hp engine do you get everything you need to swap it in?

Yes, in canada. They made a SOHC 1.8?

No u will not get everything u need for it u will need to change the clutch get a gtx ecu or a haltech e6k standalone u will need a intercooler which i belive braden is making a kit for around a grand.. With these mods ur car should run low 14's maybe even 13's prob need bigger injectors fuel rail and fuel pump too.. But BLT has very nice motors and can pick one up for around a grand shipped i think for the GTX www.barelylegaltransplants.com
im sure theres plenty of little things u will need to piece together also check out his site he has a swap section ...Jon 93 lx
