1g lx trans

I heard that lx trans will brake when u get to like 350 hp.i heard that it will explode and other bad things about it. Today at work i had a visitors from germany(i work at vw dealer)and they seen mine trans that i kiled couple weeks ago. They took a look at it and asked what is a trans from.I told them that is from mazda and they looked at it mine broken parts.I broke the spider gear that left side goes in. So with out teling them taht i run mine car hard thay told me that i had a hard take off and probly whell hop and they were right. Also asked tham couple questions what thay think about the entire trans. They said that gears look strong but the case is a week point. Difriential housing has very week casting. I also had a vw 4 cyl trans case and i looked at it and it had a web casting around dif bearings. But looking at mazda trans they gears look like vw vr6 gears and that is a prety strong trans. MIne friends from germany toold me that the case might be the one of the first things to go on that trans.

Does anyone have any opinions on this?. Ideas of how to make it hold more power. Jon

it will be hard to reinforce cast aluminum.i gues the rear trans mount location dont help.also that mount gets the most abuse.

The gearbox at this level of performance will probably not hold up to abuse. There is a place in Melboune that can strengthen the gearboxes by bracing them internaly and machining the housing and fitting a larger thrust bearing. You may also want to look at shot peening 1st,second and third gear plus the input shaft if you plan on doing hard launches. The bracing/ strengthening the case is very important as the case on the 1.8 G/boxes can flex which will cause the gap to widen between the gears and then all hell breaks loose. Once you fix the case so it wont flex you will only strip teeth which is not hard to fix and you can aleviate that problem to an extent with the afformentioned shot peening. If you take it easy with your changes and don't drop the cluch you shouldn't have any problems.

I have heard stories of people rather than strengthening the gearbox they use a mazda 121 clutch which while it dosent last too long it certainly stops the gearbox from being damaged. Another idea for the gearbox is to use the GTR gearbox however these are quite rare and hard to get hold of. There are a number of rally teams that run TX3's and GTX's and sometimes they sell their parts which can be a good oportunity to get a competition grade gearbox

I wonder what place in Melbourne does this? Should be the same process for a FWD case.

Rick
