trans-axle help

hi im a newbie, im new to the protege but not the engine.
ive never worked on a trans-axle before so i need help

1st and 3rd gear work fine and 2nd and rev only work most of the time. the clutch isnt slipping at all, it just want go into 4th and fith at all.

any opinions

Not sure about the others, but its possible that you've got some stripped teeth on 2nd and reverse.

so should i replace the whole trans-axle?
or is it just the gear-box?

I believe that it might be cheaper to get the transaxle rebuilt (gearbox = transmission/transaxle). However, if you really do have stripped gears then it might be cheaper to get a junkyard transaxle and have it rebuilt instead. I'm not 100% and I can imagine that people will post here telling me that I'm wrong pretty soon.

im just going to replace the whole thing and the seals.
maybee throw in a cluth kit if my tax return is big.
