I am very interested in these cams, and can't wait to see the dyno numbers. Are any of you guys going to change out the springs with the cams? I know I have touched on this before, but maybe I just need a little reassurance. My previous car (not a Mazda) required that the springs be upgraded along with a change to a more aggressive cam. On that particular model, the additional lift and duration could cause fatigue failure over time in the stock springs (like when you bend a paper clip back and forth until it breaks), resulting in dropped valves. I have seen major engine damage as a result of somebody elses' dropped valve. Regarding the install, I am sure all of you are using Mazda's factory service manual for this car? I don't think that there is any other reputable manual out there, and for bearing cap torques/ tightening pattern, I don't think I would want to rely on anything else.

the cams were not able to be dyno'd on wednesday like planned due to the shims not arriving in time. Wagner is 5th in line for his own AWD dyno and after it is installed we won't have anymore of these waiting games. They have to get dyno appointments with an inconsistant local shop so they (and us ultimatly) are at their mercy.

I'm also hoping for updates. Since Wagner is on a waiting list for their dyno they are at the mercy of another (less reliable) shop for their testing.

I do know that the shims for the R&D cams did not come in in time for their previous dyno appointment. I would expect they are in now but with so many irons in the fire it may take a little while longer to get firm results. The GB will not end until dyno #'s are released and everyone is happy.

p.s. You wouldn't believe the amount of work these guys have on their plate. The Protege community is not their bread and butter and look at how much they are doing to support it!

dammit! hurry up. i'm already buying 'other stuff' to fulfill my need to shop and this is taking funds away from the camshaft account

Feel free to send me the money now and I will hold it until the GB ends. I have no problems accepting payments now, I was just not going to ask for them until dyno's were available!

You know, I am in the same boat as Phantom Cruiser. The P5 is getting a set of Eibach progressive rate springs this week because I was getting restless with the car yet again. Plus, my annual Memorial Day trip is coming up, and all those curvy coastal roads of Northern Michigan are calling my name... But cams are still on the shopping list...
At this point, I probably want the Wagner header more than the cam for my next underhood mod, but we are waiting on info for that one, too. Looking at the photo of the header, I can guess that it's probably worth the wait!

the dyno of the header on a stock P5 (with both cats) showed 7whp and 10lb/ft . Thats a pretty impressive gain I think.

For those who are interested in these cams I wouldrecommend having a free-er flowing exhaust and intake with the cams. It's not required but it sure will help. I would say that just about everyone already has an intake of some sort though so it shouldn't be a problem.

I take it with the whole Nick thing, these will be delayed a bit too? Or no, since they're being built elsewhere? It sure would be nice to see a dyno of these things. Maybe a stock P5 with cams, then add the wagner header (which is known to do 7whp) and intake, and re-dyno.

Its hard to fathom spending $495 on something that "should" give you X% gains, and not seeing any proof. Also, would new shims be required with these cams? Are they included?

Chris, cams are delayed until further notice. Andy has a much increased work-load and these are on the back burner until his previous orders are filled, including the header GB we just ended here.

The cams will not require shims. They will just be drop in. Only the R&D cams required shims. The cams are finished. Everything is ready to go with them as it has been for a while. Andy was only waiting to put them on the dyno to get exact numbers before selling any. Once he gets caught back up I'm sure these won't be too far behind.

Ok cool, thanks. Yeah, the whole Nick thing sucks, I'm sure, for Andy as well. Andy seems awesome, his work seems awesome. Its good that hes holding off until he can get his backlog done, because it seems like the time it takes to get stuff, is the only problem he has right now. Also good to see he's hired 1-2 people to help fulfill orders.

I'm still debating spending the crapload of cash on a FI setup, or getting a header, cams, exhaust (have an intake) and some kind of piggyback to lean out fuel for the ECU's conservative AFRs. If I could get my 109whp MP3 to 135-140whp with all of that, I'd be plenty happy.

Dynos would be a definite advantage, especially if they did the cams alone to show gains, and then added his header and an intake of some sort to show net gains.

Chris
