P5 Intake WTF?

We just got our P5 last week. It must have been one of the last "new" ones out there. It was an exec. car with only 4k on it.

Anyway, I popped the hood and saw that rats maze of an intake. Has anyone seen why the runner is so long and haphazard? Our old Tracer and Escort (both 3G) had silencer boxes that were about 1gallon but they didn't have this much tubing. Has anyone taken off that tubing and just cut a hole in the airbox? Do you see any bad effects of doing that?

.

hahaha, yup. Been there done that.

Save yourself time and just go ahead and purchase an Ebay CAI. Replace all of that junk and enjoy the benefits of a CAI at a cost of about $65.

Has anyone just taken the stuff out and put in the K&N? I don't believe in spending in those CAIs. My VW runs like a nuclear furnace and I just cut the box and it ran a lot better.

has anyone? congrats on the p5 but realize that you are about 3.5 years late (technically speaking - p5s came out in may of 01). people have pretty much done anything and everything to the cars. yes, you can take our the silencer and the vetical tube between the silencer and the airbox. that's what i did and i also put a k&n in. difference? NONE - just a little louder.

Yeah no one understands that more than I. My VW is 12 years old and there is nothing new for it. This is exactly what I was thinking, just taking out the tubes. Doesn't it open up the power band a little? I don't really like how it seems to run out of breath at around 3500. It isn't the end of the world, it is my wife's car and she doesn't mind it all that much.

most people say they feel a difference especially with the intake. i think its only in their heads, after all, you DO want the car to be faster after a mod so they think it is faster. but dynos are not sensitive enought to measure 1-2 HP gain...

I just took out that first part that travels across the front of the engine over the header and dropped in a K&N

First reply...

Also new to the club, read a lot of threads about the ebay CAI and it's looks like that's the way I'm gunna go as well. I can't explain to my wife why I spent 240 bucks on a CAI, so spending 65 is a hella of a lot better. I did a search for ebay CAI and there are so many to choose from. Does anyone have a link??? I'm looking for one with red accents to go along with the sway bar.

Thanks to all, look forwarded to chattin with you all more!
