Talking i got the AEM intake

i just got the AEM intake from NOPI for $215 (ouch).Took around an hour to install because ofbad directions and one hand to work with (other is stitched up).I just got done like 30 min ago andlove the way it looks but it sits alittle close to the AC fan but no problems so far.Over heating wont be a problem i let it idle with the AC on for like 10 min no problems there either. All in all a good buy but be carefull with the filter its a pain in the neck to get in .If you want a good intake try this one so far its kinda loud but i can peal out in an auto(couldnt before). Alittle expensive but good.

cool, I just installed my AEM intake on my auto P5 today too. Does yours look like this?

Apparently the intake that curves down to the tranny is not supposed to fit in the automatic transmissions. Mitch at protege5online had trouble fitting it in his auto and AEM told him that the 2.0L auto needs the 1.8L intake. That is the one you are seeing on my car above.

I did not really notice it to be much louder, maybe just a little bit. At higher RPMs the higher pitched sucking sound is really cool.

Anyone else confirm that the 1.8 is needed for the auto p5?

I wasn't told that at the store... i'm gonna probably buy AEM this weekend so this information would be greatful!

Thanks!

I can tell you everything I was told. A guy on ebay who sells this intake told me that the 5 speed version (part# 22-481) will not fit the automatic versions. So I asked Mitch at protege5online. He mentioned that he had troubles fitting the 22-481 onto his automatic test car and this could be the reason. He contacted AEM and they told him that the 22-481 certainly is only for 5 speed. 22-480, the intake for the 1.8L is the intake for the 2.0L automatics. Mitch passed this on to me. Here is a quote from Mitch on a previous post:

Actually it is. The AEM 2.0L Short ram only fits the Manual Tranny. It wont fit the auto tranny. I called AEM about it today. They said you have to use the 1.8L intake for the 2.0L auto trannys. So:

2001-2002 Manual 2.0L uses 481 AEM
99-2001 1.8L all & 2001-2002 2.0L Autos used 480
found in this post.

Then I found some other sites that also mentioned this.

Options Auto Selling AEM for 5 speed only

Another site selling for 2.0L automatic
Same site as above, but the 1.8L, notice the same part number

Another site that differentiates between tranny types

This is a lot of examples. I think the best proof is that Mitch talked to them on the phone and they confirmed this information.

Someone may find a way to get the 5 speed to fit the auto tranny model somehow but this is a sure thing. I hope this helps.

I think that the 2.0L Injen looks better than the auto AEM as well. I have a manual so mine doesn't look like that.

I like being able to see the filter but I also would have liked a bit more powder coated tubing. The AEM for 5 speed is cool but the filter is hiding. I'm not too worried about super performance but when I take my car to sound competitions and shows I want to have something cool looking under the hood.

The Injen looks really nice. The red accents with the polished tubing really complements the red tower bar. I definately would have liked to get it if I could have gotten as good a deal as I did on the AEM(ebay).

Yeah, looking at the 1.8 AEM on the P5, it doesn't look that bad actually.... it is kinda nice to see the filter. More piping would be nice tho. Whichever one I get will depend on the deal I get too.....

Hi just curious if there are any documented power gains from these intakes. Has anyone here dynoed their car before & after? I hate the idea of spending money on 'performance' parts that don't increase power.
