This will be my last post (maybe)...I know I will be missed But anyway, Don't talk $hit if you can't back it up. You can't win (or even hang) against our Grand am's....Point Blank!!! Sorry about the ranting and raving, but I was pissed....I love my car as do you. Or you wouldn't be here. I never had problem with other cars until people start to say $hit.. And how this thread was started that was $hit. Thats like me starting a thread stating that I beat a Mustang GT or hung with it!! Not gonna happen. But us Grand am owners are smarter than that!! Not that MOST of you aren't I found Most of the people on the thread to KNOW what your taking about!! Good Job!!! I like GM so I'm not going to bash them or listen to it!!! And when I hear people doing it, I flip!!!! Keep modding and stop lying!!

actually isnt there only a 10 hp difference between the current Protege and Grand Am...Im talking normal models...most Grand Am's arent V-6's....they are 4 bangers...and isnt the Protege quite a bit lighter than a Grand Am...Food for thought....

oh by the way...I read consumer reports and they said said the Grand Am over all was well below average....worst in class in reliability..recommended buy was Mazda 626...

Found this usless thread after looking at the flamers other posts. He was talking **** in the NE section. Why are you lurking on a Mazda board? Is it that bad over in your hood? I mean, I've never found myself in your forum by accident or otherwise. Did you really think people on a mazda site were going to say ahhhh **** my bad I should of bought a Grand Am. GO HOME and freely talk **** about proteges, we really could care less.

well i own both a 02 protege es/gt and a v6 grand am and both cars have there ups and downs the grand am has more power but lacks interior styling , the protege lacks power but has awesome interior styling and there is no way a protege could hang with the v6 grand ams maybe the 4cylinder ones but no way with the v6 grand ams and yes the protege does handle better then the grand am

Ok just the facts....All GT's come with a V6 and the GT outsell the SE by 3-2 so..............Most of them do not have 4-bangers....There is one of those STUPID people I was talking about

..i own both too... the protege5 does have cool carbon fiber interior...but the radio buttons are a bit cheap in feeling... the car has no go compared to my GT...nor would i expect it to being a 4cyl... i love the styling of both cars, but these two cars are completely different... this topic has gotten way off... the original statement was that this guy said he beat a Grand Am... not a chance...especially if it was a V6... i've driven both... i think the GT handles better than the Protege (just my opinion)... but the thread goes from that statement to an argument over reliability... that isn't the issue... Some people on here know that some of the Grand Am guys arguments are true to the initial intention of this thread and therefore feel the need to change the subject... Mazda does have a history of being more reliable... but it is obvious to everyone in the automotive world that GM has turned around... sales have been better at GM that almost every other car company... quality has improved greatly... and GM did earn the top 3 spots for build quality this past year by JD Power... so let's just end this argument... each car owner is passionate about their cars... and as waffle said..both have their strengths and weaknesses...

I find it really funny that so much discussion can be had over which car is faster than the other, when no-where does it mention how much sack and how much skill the driver has.

No matter how much power you have, the manual has the advantage in controlling the shift points - If he know's what he's doing.

And there is the possibility that the guy in the Grand Am just didn't have the hammer all the way down. Or maybe when he started getting into the upper 90's he got a little nervous and backed off a bit.

I seriously value the opinion of the guys who own and have experience with both cars in this matter.

Personally, I look at some grand ams on the highway, and I wonder how someone could call that quality. When you look at the trunk lid and there's a 1/2 inch gap on the left side and a 1/4 gap on the right... how can you have faith in the quality of that vehicle.

...plain and simple truth is that no car is perfect... all cars have flaws here and there.. .my Mazda whistles at highway speeds cuz of the roof rack... i was told i should take it off... why was it put on there then just for me to take it off...

p.s. my GT doesn't have that trunk gap...hehe

lets put a knot in this thread and close it...lets agree to disagree....you guys think pro's are slow....and we think Grand Am's are peices of **** that drive like tanks..aftermarket parts can do stuff to improve both but it costs a fortune either way!

Talking Hehehehehe....

This is pretty funny...
Let me add my 2cents. My rich *** friend got a 2001 Grand AM last year, and from the LINE, it can't even compete. I have a Protege ES/GT, AUTO!!! I smoked my friend's *** coming off the line. We only raced to 110kph, and at that point, he was able to catch up, and we were basically neck and neck. I'm sure he proally would have passed me if we kept going, there's no argueing that. But I'm happy with my cars huge acceleration, and also with the fact that I payed a lot less for it.
IMO GrandAm = Big HEAVY
Protege = Small LIGHT
Also... IMHO, Grand Am's suck!!!
jj, they are mediocore.

Wow, this thread is big. Anyway, skidpad isn't the only factor in determining how fast a car is in the corners, just like it isn't all about horsepower. Close-ratio trannys and width of the powerband come into play here. There's transitional handling, which light cars would seem to have and advantage (why the MP3 beat the Corvette in the slalom and was considered as good as the Ferarri at handling over all...it just doesn't have 500HP). There's cornering speed, which 4wd cars sometimes have a disadvantage here, because all of the wheels are skidding and they are all connected to the engine, and it can bog down a bit. And on a race track, a lot has to do with the driver. IMO, light cars are better (why do you think the Rabbit GTI was one of the best sports cars in its day...er still is? What's the big deal with the Miata?) Also IMO, I would never buy an American car, that doesn't mean I am a terrorist!!!! I happen to think that VW's are fine cars. I enjoy my Mazda as well.
