air filter question

i was looking under the hood of my truck and it has a cone type filter in an airbox. i was thinking about replacing the filter with a k&n and removing the lid to the airbox. can i safely do this? i would imagine it would be similiar to a SRI provide a little difference.

which reminds me of that one ricer around here...i guess he took a CAI and put it on upside down and cut a hole through his hood. he has like 4 inches of filter poking through on the drivers side hood...
