We've had our 3 for a year now, 14K miles, the rears still dust up like crazy. NBD, I just use Simple Green to soak them before washing the car. It is weird, tho.

Got the same problem too. I bought the car used with 21k on it and have had it for about 5 days and the rear wheels are already showing some dust... I think ill look into upgrading the rear pads.

I also have some squeeking too, It doesnt really bother me cuz I figure its b/c the rotors have had some rust on em from sitting in the car lot.

 

I haven't noticed a greater amount of break dust on my car yet simply because I haven't had a chance to hand wash it yet. I bought the car in mid winter, and all I can do is bring her in to the best touchless car wash I can find.

Now that the weather is starting to get a little warmer out here, I think I'm gonna try and wash it sometime in the next week or 2. I'll let you guys know if I see anything (seeming that I do own a 2k5... maybe there's a difference?).

I have noticed excessive squeeking after the car has sat in the garage after driving in the rain. I've chalked it up to cheap pads, and after breaking over 10mph, there's no squeeking, and shortly after the pads and rotors heat up.

I don't think it's an issue, but when it comes to having sparkling clean rims, that might get frustrating!!

WAX YOUR WHEELS.

I use Meguiar's Gold Class. Your wheels are clear-coated, so waxing them works -- and it helps keep that brake dust down. It doesn't cure the problem (i.e. cheap pads), but it does help. And it also helps to keep water from spotting on them -- makes 'em smooth as a baby's bottom! Try it -- it's even recommended in the owner's manual (doesn't EVERYONE read their manual from cover to cover like I do? ...)

P.S. Keep in mind that the spray-on "tire wet" stuff everyone uses to make their tires look shiny is STICKY. I don't care which brand you use; I've tried most of them myself, including some high-dollar ones. No matter how hard you try, that stuff gets oversprayed onto your wheels and acts like glue for brake dust. I've stopped using it, accepting not-as-shiny tires for lots-more-shiny wheels.

The rear pads are smaller and are cheaper. I don't think Mazda realized people would complain about that lol. When they wear down, just replace them with a "premium" set of pads and the brake dust issue should be more even. One thing to note is the brake bias on the Mazda 3's is around a 70/30 instead of the market standard 90/10 or 80/20 for small cars. That's why your guys' cars brake much better then the competition
