factory turbo down the road... how much?
and at what difficulty?
I'm planning to buy a 2003 ES. (Won't be able to afford the Mazdaspeed, and also prefer my sport sedans more stealthy looking) How difficult and expensive would it be for me (do you wager) to add the factory turbo down the road?

You will not be able to buy the factory turbo. In order to even get a replacement manifold from a Mazdaspeed you will need to provide proof of ownership. Even if it was available the price would be ridiculous
BEGI has a turbo kit that is similar for under 3 large. That would be your best option for now.

Though there is talk of limiting the sale of the turbo/manifold to previous mazdaspeed owners, I personally think it will only be a matter of time before that goes out the window. Mazda will be robbing themselves blind of huge amounts of sales for those parts. In addition to all the people who don't have turbos, they would be missing out on the sales to aftermarket companies that would port them and put external waste gates on them, etc...
Perfect example would be my Mom's 35th anniversery edition stang. It was supposed to have several features that were exclusive that have now found their way onto production GT's as well as the Bullitt.
Anyway, FatElvis, it would not be a wise purchase to buy a turbo from Mazda. Most likely, for less than half of what you would spend on the turbo from Mazda you could get a bigger, better turbo from an aftermarket performance shop.

Yea, I talked to my dealer about that and he also said that I would have to be a Mazdaspeed owner to get the factory turbo. (My intention was to have the only Mazdaspeed version of the P5, that would still be under factory warranty) He said It could still be done and that he could *finagle* it. But it would come at a heafty $10,000+ price {That would include EVERYTHING needed to turn a stock P5 w/ ABS already added into a Mazdaspeed version .. i.e. Paint, Brakes, Exhaust, Garrett Turbo, Engine tuning, Tires, Wheels, Emblems, Mats, Shifter, etc... } Unfortunatly that modification would also VOID the warranty. Even though its Mazda parts and they would be installing them. But you can sell the stock parts to offset that price by about 3,000. Unfortunatlely though Mazda wont by them back. Even if you have it done before you take delivery of your vehicle from the initial purchase.

I was talking to the owner of the Mazda dealership around here and he stated that the turb will be available next year after the next batch of Mazdaspeed Protege's are available. He said February for the next batch and a couple of months after that for the turbo.

as a mazda sales rep i have encountered that exact ? over and over....can i buy the turbo kit from mazda.....answer is no....only way is if there was a recall on the turbo and all the componants have to be replaced....and seriously....i don't think all the componants will fail at once.....what a person needs to get the set up is the serial number, proof of ownership, and a fualty setup....so no the kit is not available....and maybe yes maybe later but not for the next few years otherwise everyone would be building mazdaspeed proteges in there back yard.....but i'm sure soon enough it will be a standard option on proteges..as the colour lazer blue did.....i had this one kid ask me if the laser blue p5 mwas a mp3-p5...i said no and laughed at his face......and said u dumbass...thats the new color offered for this year......that kid was my buddy...lol
