I thought the 1.8L DOHC first gen Proteges used the G5M-R tranaxle? I know the '94+ Probe/MX-6/626 2.0L cars use the G25M-R tranaxle.

You will need to get the right bellhousing size though. Depending on the application those tranaxles use different size bellhousings that won't work on every engine.

Question

90 to 92:
1.6 sohc, 1.8 sohc: F5M-R
1.8 dohc : G5M-R
93 to 94:
1.6 sohc, 1.8 sohc: F25M-R
1.8 dohc : G25M-R

all trans identical except for gear ratio. Thats from the Haynes mavual.

is that true?

I doubt the ratios are different for transaxles originally installed in Proteges, but those transaxles were also used in other cars with different ratios.
