Question LOC

What brand of LOC did you end up using Sir Nuke? The only game in town here is 'Suntech' and I'm not sold on the quality. I believe the converter will be the achillies heel of the entire system for noise and I don't want to take a chance. I'm considering ordering one from David Navon, but its pricy. Anyone know of the suntech quatity or comment?

he didn't use one. The Alpine amp has speaker level inputs so a high to low converter is unecessary.

I used some of Navon Engineerings stuff in my car and it works great. No noise what-so-ever. I think its worht the $$$. The guy is/was a physicist and seems to know how to make some quality stuff.

I've used cheaper line conveters before (Radio Shack) with much dismay. Lots of pops, whines and other interference, along with signla attenuation.

That is funny. Where on earth are you going to find boxed Alpine amps just sitting on a shelf where you could see the BIG numbers? Usually you have to talk to a sales person and if they're quoting only Max Power numbers I'd head for the door!

NONE....I didn't use ANY LOC's.....the Alpine V-Power series amp has speaker level inputs available as well as RCA jacks...so its totally unnecessary to use LOC's....all I did was ensured I kept my main power input line for the amp seperated from my speaker wires...and I have absolutely NO alternator noise....at any volume level.

I went to my local Car Audio Shop....there is really only ONE place in the town I live in to go for REAL car audio equipment...and they always keep a stock of all the items that they move....and worst case....they can and will have ANYTHING in a max of two days...IF special ordering is required...and its actually available from their supplier. I am aquainted with the owner...and his manager...and they will do just about anything to satisfy a customer..even thought they KNOW they are the only game in town....just a great bunch of guys to work with.

I used LOCs from AudioLink. They are also good quality (if you want an alternative to the Navone stuff. I don't know if one is better than the other or not. I have no noise that I can tell from these units in my set up.

AudioLink

I used the PL2 in my install.

Great! Nice to see people like yourself and Sir Nuke having good success by using the stock deck...I'm going to be ordering in the next day or so...I've got so much work to do on my Hallowe'en display that I have put off doing my amp install...now that my garage is a toasty 9 C, it should make things more interesting

thanks for the link I'm going to do a bit more research now...

2003 P5

dont the new 2003 models have 6 speakers instead of 4?

how would you wire the system through the amp for that, or would it even be worth replacing the small speakers up front?

No just tweeters in parallel off the front channels. They count it as a 6th speaker. It isn't. Its a none crossed-over componenet much like realy cheap coaxles. If seperates are considered differen speakers then I have 10 not including the subs.

Please bear with me as I am very new to car audio upgrades. I have been reading on here about updating the factory HU with better speakers, amp and sub. I plan to follow Sir Nukes setup. Would just like to get opinions on the setup.
Amp will be the five channel Alpine. I think I would like the Infinity Kappa series speakers. No brainer for the rears 61/2. The fronts is what I am having trouble figuring out. Since I have the 2003 MP5 with the crappy tweeters up front. What would be the best course of action for dealing with these? Would it be best to go with a 6 1/2 component system? What problems would arise in swapping out the frong oval speakers for the new 6 1/2's? I don't really know what the alternative would be with the 5 channel amp. I would rather put in 5 x 7's with new tweeters as well. I'm just not sure how this would be done. Haven't totally decided on a sub yet, probably a 10inch JL in their cabinet like Sir Nukes. Sorry for all the questions, I appreciate any help. Thanks in advance

AJ

Some manufactures make 5x7 componenets. JL had an XR series last year 5x7 component last year. Also a 5 1/4 or 6 1/2 componenet could be used without cutting up the door s or screwing new holes. Either 5's or 6's will need to have an adapter plate made to use them. A shop should be able to do the task for $30 or so.

i dont think that your going to get too much more out of them that you couldnt through upgrading the door speakers with 3-ways.

but i could be wrong, and probably am.
NOTE TO EVERYONE!!!!!!
stop thoughing around the word 3 ways. 3 way speakers set comprises of a seperate tweeter, mid and midbass driver. NOT A POS TRIAXLE, with a mid and two different sized tweeters glued to it.
Last weekend a kid told me he was considering a four way over at best buy, I alost clocked him when i found out it was a 6x9 quad axle POS.
