Question To those with the "MP3" stereo pocket

this is a question for those that have installed the "mp3 style" stereo pocket- the one with the latch below the stereo- in there new protege with an aftermarket head unit. is there a way to mount the head unit in once you install that pocket? does it NEED to be mounted in or does it fit snug and stay secure? thanks for any help you can give.

as far as i know, they come from the dealer like that. Its a whole headunit install kit. Later this month circuit city and best buy will start carring the install kit WITH the pocket underneith the headunit slot. You can either get the one with the door latch or just one that is open w/o the door. I dont know the prices but should be under $20.

Ill run over to Circuit city today and see if they came out yet.

Aaron, if you want just a kit with an open pocket for the 2002 P5 you can get one online now. BEST brand makes a kit already I just had it installed this past week and I really like the fit and looks. I got it from AUTO SOUND GEAR.COM along with the harness. But it sounds like you want the pocket with a door and I only heard mazda dealers have them. I have the prices I paid for my pocket and harness if you want to know.

I'm interested in this too. I really want a pocket with a door. It looks better and it's more useful. Thinking about biting the bullet and just buying the damn thing from mazda for $90. Hate to spend that much on a piece of plastic but I plan on having the car for a while so what the hell.

I am getting a pocket for a 1995 Protege - a body shop told me it has a door also, but just has a slightly different mounting - I'm sure I can MacGuyver it up (and show anyone else how to do the same) if it at-least-close-to-fits.

If it does, I might be able to get my hands on a BUNCH of them, for anyone interested. They sell for FAR less than the $70-$130 for the MP3 pocket (try like around $25-$30 shipped).

I will definitely update - my pocket is arriving on Monday and I will try it out.

Anyone interested let me know - if this works, I can definitley get some kind of group-buy discount - maybe a few bucks off if I can buy 10 or more at a time. Post here or send me an IM if interested, and I'll keep you all informed of the install in the meantime.

Okay, well, the 95 pocket wasn't even close - it's not even a covered cubby. These guys in the parts department are phreakin' BONEHEADS.

The pocket itself is a slightly nicer piece than the Metra kind - but it still is an open design, and I didn't even try to fit it - I just returned the damn thing.

And the search continues.....
