Protege 5 speakers

Want to upgrade mine.

What size are they, so I'll know what to go shopping for??

Thanks,

Don

6x8" in the front 6.5" in the back, you can get plates for the front to fit 6.5" in the front, just watch the mounting depth because the window rolls down right behind the speaker.

front 5x7, mounting 2.5in.
rear 6.5, mounting 2.0in, per mazda (i say about 2.2in)

this sounds familiar...

. . . but the first two responses are . . . . well, different.

Wink

Ahoy,
Not only are the responses different, they are both correct!

I found I could fit 6.5 front and back, but I cut out my own adapter mounts from mdf. Mounted the speakers to these then mounted the mdf to the stock hole. This makes for more flexibilty in speaker choice, and a better sound as the thin metal door is more likely to vibrate than a 3/4 in mdf. I am still playing with my setup and have been moving my mids...

So, we need more info on what you are going to do, or you could search for the answer to this question.

it's all good don
yeah, most people ask what sizes they are, so i guess we decided to also add the mounting depth just in case...

I appreciate you adding the depth, but if 6 X 8's will fit without any modifications in the front, I'd rather go with them than 5 X 7's.

Thanks,

Don

they're the same thing. 5x7/6x8 doesn't matter. altho some ppl would say go with components up front as oval spkrs kinda suck. but if yo want just drop-in spkrs then the 5x7's should do you just fine. what brands are you looking at?

I'm looking at Pioneer TS-A6865 three ways for the front, and TS-A1665's for the rear. Assuming the 2 5/16ths deep 1665's will fit - If not, then 1655's will go for sure (1 11/16's deep)

I tried 3 different 6.5's in my Miata before I found a set I really liked, and wound up using the TS-A1665's for it, so I'm pretty sure I'll be happy with these.

I'm sure there are many superior speakers to the Pioneer line, but they are reasonably priced, and much better than what Mazda puts in the cars.

Don

Pioneer is fine, they're great for that amount of money. Just stay away from Sony

OK, so people have cut their own adapters to get 6.5s in the front openings--does anyone sell pre-cut adapters? jcilforever seems to indicate that such things exist. If you know of some available over the web, please post a link!

Thanks.

Must be one of those days... I'm looking at Crutchfield and under "Speaker Installation" and I see the categories Bass Blockers, Foam Baffles, Tools, 6x9 Speaker Boxes, Kits, Speaker Wire, and Speaker Connectors... none of them seem to have mounting adapters, and searching for "adapters" doesn't give me anything that looks promising, either. I'm sure I'm just being a bonehead, but grading final projects does that to me...
