Post 99 Protege Back door speakers

I own a 99 Protege DX..and I was wondering if the Protege was made to have speakers in the back doors, but just did not come with them? I noticed there are mesh looking speaker grills in the back doors. If anyone could let me know why this is made like this and also if speakers can be bought to fit and work with the factory system...that would be great..
Thanks alot,
Barry

hi, i drive a 1999 too.

the car only comes with 4 speakers (2 front doors + 2 trunk speakers).

you can buy another set to have 6 speakers in your protege, but you'll need a new head unit to power 6 speakers.

but i'm no audio pro - so i could be talking outta my ***.

The Protege sedan shares its rear doors with the Protege 5 hatchback. The hatchback has no rear package shelf to mount rear speakers, thus we get the mounts for their rear door speakers. I believe they are 6.5" round openings while the front doors are 5x7/6x8 oval openings. Obviously, there aren't any speakers mounted, and I don't think there is any wiring for them in the rear door on the sedans either. It wouldn't be difficult to add them though. Probably not worth it with a stock deck.

if you had the extra cash to invest in additional speakers, go nuts.
i replaced the front door and rear speakers and added some front tweets .... and i'm not finding a sound gap

*shrugs

if i found it hollow, i might try adding them
but i'm happy with the sound i've got

I have a 99 LX, and i've been given some pretty good ideas from a few ppl.

the back doors ARE 6.5" and you are right Eric, there is no wiring. As far as another deck, that is not needed. In a stereo system those speakers would play the same thing as the rears, so the best solution is to run wires from the trunk to the rear door speakers. On a stock stereo, that could sound horrible, killing your entire system (as far as quality) because of the extra drag on power. If you have a replacement head unit, run it's power straight from the battery so that it can get more power to all the speakers, helping the added drag. If you have an amp, do not worry, that is the BEST way to do it. Just run 4 pairs of wires, 2 to the 6x9's in your trunk and the 6.5's in the rear door.

I'm going to do just that (with an amp) as soon as i replace my front stock 5x7's.
