Sir Nuke, got any suggestions for good door speakers for the sedan? And how about a suggestion for the 4/5 channel amp you're talking about? Will I be able to re-use that amp for the sub, or will I need a separate amp for the sub? Just to give you an idea, I'm not a huge bass freak, but I like deep, low-freq bass (I'm thinking a single 10 or 12 will do for me). I'm really a big noob at this whole sound system thing so take it easy on me please...
Damaster...I am not a "bass freak" either...and I am just running a single 10" myself. As for the door/deck speakers for your sedan. What I suggest is for you to go to some quality audio shops that have a sound room set up so you can personally listen to the speakers.....and make your choice from that informed position. what sounds good to me may not sound good to you. Its mostly personal preference.

As for the amp? I can CERTAINLY make a good suggestion....the one that is under MY seat powering my system. Its an ALPINE V-Power 5 Channel. you need to look around to find one...the part number for it is MRP-F320. It was still being advertised in Crutchfields in the spring catalog...and was marked down to $199. I have seen them on Ebay.....and a few other places as well. And yes you can use it for the sub...as a matter of fact that is SPECIFICALLY what the 5th channel is for. The amp itself puts out 40 watts/channel RMS and the 5th channel puts out 120 watts RMS.
I chose Rockford Fosgate speakers for all my doors...and I got a JL Audio 10W0 Powerwedge for the sub. the powerwedge is the sub and the box and its shaped PERFECT for the P5...the back angle on the box is the exact same as the back of the seats and it fits there perfect.

when I inquired about this with Mazdastuff I was told that in addition to the sub the flooring in the models that have it is also a bit ticker in the trunk to acomocate the additional height above the spare tire.

So, at least to install it in a model in which it was never an option (like my 02 P5) you have to add that spacer for under the carpet as well... not sure if you would need it for model years where it was an option.

Also, I was discussing this with people on the 'other' board, and I came to the conclusion that the 03 models have the spare tire mounted upside down compared to the 02s - the 02 models (like mine), have a piece of metal protruding from the floor of the wheel well, and the spare is mounted outside up, and attached to the piece of metal. Apparently, the 03 models have a slightl;y different bolting in arrangement and have the spare mounted inside up, as it would need to to fit the sub inside the spare.

Dale.

UGH, damn dealer

Well, I stopped by the dealer, and spoke to the parts guy....... LOL! I knew more than he did!

Anyway, I wrote all my info down for him. I have a 03, came with roof rack and not sub, I would like to add sub, what parts do I need/ process.

A few days past and I called back to check in, they of course had no idea what I was talking about and did not have any of my info..... *sigh*

Anyone wanna give their dealers a ring or drop em a note to find out this info? So far, I've run into a brick wall with this one.

SOrry, my dealer's a moron on the info, too.

They're also the GM parts counter, so they'll hook you up with fourty five flavors or gun racks, and hitch covers for yer pickup, but homeboy was downright bewildered with the blue haired hoodlum asking about speakers...

Either way, I DO have my factory sub, and might also be willing to yank out whatever wiring's necessary. BUt I'm still sorta trying to decide if I need to put my Solobaric in or not. Rolling around with my girl tonight catching some cypress hill on hers in her bigass old boat sorta got me antsy, though.

ROFL!!! That's is some funny ****.

Damn, this is frustrating. I'll have to take a trip to the dealer and see if they'll let me rip apart the trunk of one on the lot. LOL, yea right. Well, if anyone else has any luck, just let me know.

spare tire sub

I just bought my P5 a few weeks ago and it seems they changed from having the spare tire sub standard and roof rack optional to vice-versa at mid/year. My dealer checked into the spare tire sub which was no problem to get. However, Mazda says the wiring is totally different from the head unit with this sub- it's not just a matter of plugging it in. Check into this part before you decide.

I ended up putting my old Alpine Flex 5 amp and Rockford 10" sub in the trunk. The rest of the speakers are ok for stock but nothing like a good set of separates!

fks

feldenkrais, you are probably or should I say most likely better off with a separate sub versus a spare tire sub because I can't imagine a factory spare tire sub sounding all that good. What do they look like the old Pioneer spare tire subs? I don't know if you ever seen the old Pioneer S.T. sub, but it used some thing like a 5 1/4, but it was the design of the port that made it sound bigger than a 5 1/4. I never actually heard one, but can't imagine one sounding better than something similar to your set up---a single 10" sub powered by a decent powered amp.
