P5 and factory spare tire sub...

How easy is it to add the factory spare tire sub to a P5 that didn't come with one?

Also, does anyone happen to have one they are looking to get rid of?

Poseur July-8th-2003 03:10 AM

No idea on the switch, but I've got one..

Just getting my stereo swapped over into my new P5, hopefully this week. Honestly, with as much as that silly little thing adds, and my need for space, I've been debating howmuch I need to, but in the end, my MP3 neccessity overrules, (that and having a Kicker Solobaric just sitting around doing nothing feels criminal)

Not bad

I have spare tire sub. Sure its not a 10inch rockford but it doesn't sound bad at all. I really like it. If you really want to save the space I'd say at least check it out. Oh and if you go to a dealership to listen to one, make sure its plugged in. When I was buying mine, every dealership i went to didn't have the power plugged in so it sounded like crap. I had to do it myself after i purchased the car. I was very impressed on it was plugged in, for being as small as that sub is.

is this also available for the sedan? and when you say "factory spare tire sub" do you mean its available by Mazda?

The sub can be purchesed through your local mazda dealer, i think it goes for $250.00, you'll need to add the wiring yourself.

250 for the mazda sub when a 10" kenwood goes for 119 at best buy for retail....and if you have someone thats works at best buy you know the cost of that kenwood 10 is actually 37$ kinda sick how much markup there is.

I love this little sub, I had jl 10 and a 10 disc changer in the hatch of my old P5. This time around 6disc in-dash and spare tire sub, For factory sub I'm Happy with the sound!!:D I wish they offered this in 02 when i bought the 1st P5

damaster July-8th-2003 11:42 AM

ok, since we're on the discussion of subs, anybody know how much it will cost me to get a setup like the Mazdaspeed has? You know, the rear trunk mounted sub/amp that doesn't take up any space whatsoever and replaces the rear speakers, which have been moved to the rear doors.

Protege5 NewB here, picked up my 2003.5 P5 2 weeks ago, love everything about it so far.

I was blown away by sound the factory sub puts out, sounds much better then some of the morons u hear riding down the road listening to nothing but bass out of there two 12+.

If you don't have a pre-installed sub from Mazda I prob wouldnt spend 250 on just the spare tire sub from them when you could get a decent sub and amp for around the same price installed, unless you need the room.

I know I have read acouple threads where people are bashing the spare tire sub, to them I say Bah! Put the money into performance mods, a stereo doesn't make the car go faster! ;)

well the only thing that is REALLY going to make the car significantly faster is either a turbo or Nitrous.

HOWEVER.....if you don't have the factory sub...as mentioned before...you can get a decent amp and sub together for that kind of money...and there are decent subs that don't take up the entire hatch area...

I have a JL Audio 10" Powerwedge...it fits up against the back of the seats very neatly, the back of the box is angled EXACTLY like the seats are so it sits flat against it...and it really takes up NO useable space to speak of. The back if the box is perfectly verticle and the TOP of the box only sticks out about 4 inches from the back of the seat....nice and compact...and it sounds great.

Well, if it were up to me, I'd say the hell with it, drop in a pair of JL 12", all new seperates, etc......BUT..... my wife would kick my arse!

So, anything I do needs to be stealth. I figure the best way would be to do the spare tire sub from mazda.

If I did wind up getting this, anyone have an idea of what I would need to do to install it? I have the In das 6-disc deck if that helps.

Is there a harness connector in the back someplace, or would I need to run a whole harness line from the deck to the tire well, or ......?

SOOOOOOOOOO, first you go out and buy all new speakers for the doors.....totally hidden and she won't see anything....while she is out one day....swap out all the door speakers, she probably won't even notice.

then you get yourself a nice 4 or 5 channel amp that accepts speaker level inputs....you keep the stock 6 disc indash changer....just like I did...

you get your wife a "PRESENT" and send her to a day spa, you go home and you do a stealth install of the amp under the drivers seat and PUMP UP the door speakers....then you get that little sub for the back that I previously mentioned and presto chango you got a rockin system...and its really stealthy.....and it won't rob the back of any mommy haulin room either.

THATS what I would/DID do!! :{D

Sir Nuke, got any suggestions for good door speakers for the sedan? And how about a suggestion for the 4/5 channel amp you're talking about? Will I be able to re-use that amp for the sub, or will I need a separate amp for the sub? Just to give you an idea, I'm not a huge bass freak, but I like deep, low-freq bass (I'm thinking a single 10 or 12 will do for me). I'm really a big noob at this whole sound system thing so take it easy on me please...

Yea, the seperates aren't a big deal, I can do those really anytime with the amp under the seat, but she puts the seats down alot, so any enclosure in the trunk would be seen.

So I'm pretty much stuck (which is fine with me) with the spare tire sub. So with that in mind, what would need to be done/ parts required?

well first thing would be to find out about the wiring harness...if its there or not....if it is...just get the sub and install it. if there is no wiring down there that is for a speaker...then I would try and hook up with someone in your area that has one in their car and check out the way its wired up....and see about duplicating it.
