Using the Spare tire well for sub?

Has anyone done this or know of anyone who as and could post some info. When I get my P5, I plan on making a box that utilizes the spare tire well (tire removed of course) for the subs. Probably go with 2 10's or 12's. It would have to be a slightly raised floor, but could also help with makeing a complete cover for amps/subs.

Thanks for any info you guys have

I don't know if the P5's are the same but in my 2000 protege there is a bulge in the spare tire well when you take out the tire so you can't put a box in there. I think there's fuel lines or something in the bulge, not sure what. If you want to do custom fiberglass you could probably fit a couple subs on each side of the bulge and between the wall, but not mdf. Again, not sure if the P5 is the same.

I'm guessing the 01 is the same as the 00...so when you say you had to cut off the thing that held the tire, you're talking just about the small piece that sticks up where the screw goes into like in all cars??

But under that there is a huge bulge unlike in civics...that is basically the size of the inside of the wheel, and if you look from under the car there's a bunch of stuff inside it. You still have this bulge making it impossible to fit a subbox, right?
not sure if I'm making any sense

Thanks,
Shayne

I've actually done this in my P5. I had to remove that piece you guys are talking about. I also had to raise to floor about 2 1/2" to get enough air space for my sub. Other than that It's not a difficult job.

I had a guy build me a fibreglass tub for the enclosure and an amp rack. I kinda had to mount the sub off to one side so the depth was there.

I don't have any pics of the acutal tub... yet

Here are the ones I have here

I've also added plexi glass over the amp and a grill over the sub since these were taken...

keep in mind the spare tire well is not the ideal sub enclosure, the metal is rather thin and will flex and buldge, changing the internal volume. Never heard one yet that sounds better than a box. but if space is an issue and your not going for the SQ record it'll be fine. but you'll want to use a fiberglass mold and not just the metal of the well, or weld braces under the car to stiffen it up. These are extreme cases, but i've seen them all.

If you want a very cool spare tire well wood and fiberglass enclosure design, PM me. i'll probably never get around to making one...

Doctor,

Nice setup. That is basically what I am looking at doing. I was actually thinking that it would be much easier to build the box for 1 good 12" woofer versus trying to get 2 10"/12" in that space. I am also planning on raising the floor slightly like you did and cover everything up with covers/grilles so that I still can put stuff back there. If you get any new, better pics I would be interested in seeing them.

How well does your Soundstream setup work? I have used SS 10" woofers in a previous car and they really hit good. I am definately considering them again.

I love SS.... been a big fan of them for a while. I used to have 2x12" USA's in my old beretta, with pro 51 components and a reference 500s and 200sx. I loved the way that car sounded, and I used to get a ton of comments on the SQ of it.

I told myself when I bought my new car that I wouldn't get quite so extreme, but things are starting to lean that way. I just want more and more....!!!!

hey doctor_r that's what I was saying originally, you can't because of the bulge you can't throw an mdf box in there which would otherwise fit, so the only way to do it is a fiberglass tub and have it off to the side like you...or relocate everything in the bulge if possible...

BTW nice install both of you doctor_r and 1fatEs gotta get mine finished damn it
