Cluster Swap

I have already tried the search and I couldn't find any information regarding this topic.

I want to swap some ES gauges into my 2000 DX (without tach). Will the cluster swap in without a problem? Will the tach need any special wiring? Will the mileage be stored in the ECU so when I hook the new cluster up my mileage will be the same?

Thanks in advance for any helpful information.

1. The mileage is kept in the LED box in the guage cluster, not in the ECU like most cars, so your mileage will change

2. The ES guages have the Redish/Orangish color bulbs, they are the 4 Brown backed bulbs, you need to switch those with yours, which will be green backings.

3. The tach shouldnt need and special wiring, it should already be there; however if its not, you can always get the wiring diagrams from Mazda and purchase some wires with the clip on it so it will just clip right in the harness and make it easy and professional!

Thanks for the info. I was hoping that the mileage would stay the same though.

Two things to add to what Smooothy already said:

1. If you don't want to go thru the trouble of installing the redish bulbs, or just don't like the look of them, 99-00 ES gauge clusters have the same green bulbs as the DX.

2. MAKE SURE YOU GET PAPER WORK FOR THE ODOMETER CHANGE. I had to get the spedomoter replaced on my 92 Hyundai, which also involved the replacement of the odometer. If you don't get paper work on it, and then later try to sell it, you could face sales fraud (or other charges, depending what state you're in) - but it won't be pretty. I got the paper work from a local auto shop, but I knew him well. Some grumpy mechanics might not be willing to give you the paper work unless they do the swap themselves. If that's the case, try a dealership, and if the situation is the same, try calling Mazda.

Good luck.

I have a question then... is this information about storing the mileage in the dash cluster also the same for the Protege5??

I'm pretty sure it's the same for the P5 but not 100%

hmmm... *without sounding like i want to do something illegal*..

what would happen in terms of the ECU if you were to swap Dash Clusters then?? would there be a warning from the ECU if there was tampering??

and... i was also curious about swapping ECU's... what would happen if you did that?? just say, with an MP3 ECU, or even another P5 ECU?? would there be any indications of the swap other than a bad wiring job??

sorry for all the questions, but i've seen the wiring diagram for the ECU, and there's no indication of it recording the mileage, just the cluster... so i'm a bit confused how to decifer the schematic to that regard...

hello bumblebee and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have.

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

as for the guage swapping.....do NOT I repeat DO NOT try to put a 1999 guage cluster into another 3rd gen car...it will NOT work...the electronics inside the guage cluster is different. I can't tell you EXACTLY what is different...but it is...and your car will run like crap...know of another member that did this...and he cranked his car and it ran like crap....pours black smoke out the tail pipe...and YES all he did was swap out the guage cluster.....but he used a 1999 into a 2000....so if you are going to swap clusters....stick with a 2000 up cluster....
