Changing out the stock HU

I am interested in changing out my stock HU on my 2002 P5. My biggest "problem" is that I do not want to use a casing for the new HU and have a big empty area around new deck. I read somewhere that the Protege MP3 has a storage compartment under their HU to fill the gap up. I was wondering how much this compartment is and where I can get one. A Website or # would be great appreciated. If it helps, I live in Canada.

Cheers and thanks in advance.

Would you happen to have a picture of the final product? I am not used to having this double dim deck thing. I transfered from a CRX to the P5!

There are number of options to fill the second "slot" when you go from a double-DIN radio (stock HU) to a single-DIN (practically every aftermarket radio). This is a very common situation, and installers and retailers stock a variety of products, but most of simply a pocket similar to what Mazda used on 96-01 Miatas without the second unit. For my P-5, I purchased the exact compartment used in the MP3, and the upcoming Mazdaspeed3, which is simply a pocket with a damped door, very nice for hiding things. You can see this piece on the Mazdaspeed3 page of Mazda's site. Expect to pay around US100 for it...

I looked at that as well, and the dealer told me they want $130 CANADIAN FOR IT... don't waste your money.

130$ is a lot of money. What did you do when you changed out your standard HU?

Did you get it?

I live in Toronto as well and was just wondering if you ever ended up finding a nice storage compartment. If so, where did you get it?

Thanks

KJ
