CD-Receiver Question

might be a n00b question..

What's a good CD-Receiver for about $230 US..

Browsing around Crutchfield..
the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X469 $229
and the
Alpine CDA-9805 looked nice on paper anyways...

Crutchfields prices are a little high I know..but that's the only place I know that has nearly all tech specs and a very big selection..
most likely wont be buying it from them..

the CD Receiver will be going in a 2001 Protege DX...

crutchfield is great despite price dude. they'll throw in wiring harnesses, you can buy the kit you'll need, they have how-to instructions (especially good for the 'noob'), and you can't go wrong. as far as head units, pioneer, alpine, kenwood, and jvc are great brands. the two units you mentioned are both great units, pound for pound, the alpine has 1 watt higher rms rating, the alpine offers 4 volt pre-outs as compared to the kenwoods 2 volt pre-outs (only important if you're going to amp your speakers or run subs in your car), alpine offers XM and the kenwood offers Sirrus... both great services. each offers the same flexibility of add-on components, both can play cd's the same... allowing cd-text, cd-r's and cd-rw's.. neither play mp3's. i mean, it's all in the comparission, personally, the alpine delivers a little more power and i believe delivers the reliability as well to boot. fortunately if you order off crutchfield, they're certified dealers so you'll get a full 2 year warranty on the kenwood and a 1 year on the alpine. my alpine cda-7894 kicks *** man, i love it, it's crystal clear and has some nice features such as time correction. but hey, crutchfield isn't the only place you can go... check out http://www.cd-zone.net and http://www.thezeb.com they both offer different products and aren't limited to certain brands. 4 out of 5 on the alpine, 3.9 out of 5 on the kenwood for me. hope this helps you out.
peace

pro's are small cars. i have dual 12's and they get freakin loud. dual 12's or 3 10's is borderline "killer system"...

the trouble with judging most systems on the street, is that there are many variables to take into consideration. one 10 in the right box will more than satisfy most people, but most people have never heard anything other than prefabricated boxes, which sound like ***, so you'd need 3 subs to cover up the *** sound
blue got that right. a single 10 is normally sufficient for most daily drivers. hehe, i just got greedy with my sub setup...
so you'd need 3 subs to cover up the *** sound
but then u might end up with three @sses... lol

free air has good benefits (space issues) but imo is hard to
a) find good drivers that perform well in free-air and
b) find the right imaging

however, when u find that combo, u got urself a good system. my friend had dual 15 cerwin vegas in a free-air setup that sounded awesome...
then some bonehead stole his car and ripped out all his sounds...
