I am thinking about changing my stock head unit to either the Pioneer DEH-7400MP or the Kenwood MP919. Right now, I don't want to spend a lot of cash so all I want to do is change the face and leave everything else untouched. Does anyone have either of these decks?... How much of a difference will it make in terms of sound quality if I only change the deck while keeping the stock speakers?

Changing the stock deck to a higher power unit will make a very noticable difference. For one, it will be much cleaner and louder sounding and you will have more control over your sound. Plus it's the base for expansion.

To get the most out of your new head unit, you should change to aftermarket coaxial speakers, in some cars (GM anyways) the speakers have higher impedance (10ohm in GM) and you will not get the full potential out of the deck.

I had stock P5 speakers running off my Pioneer Premier 920R HU and the stock speakers sounded pretty good with the added power. However I finally installed my pioneer 5x7's w/ horn tweets in the front and amped them and its 100% better now. On a side note I did leave in the factory tweeters in and hooked up taking 52.5 watts rms off my alpine amp and they sound great.

wuh sup I think that the MP5 stock speakers sound pretty str8 when you change the headunit. I have a kenwood kdc715 in mine and it sounds pretty decent for now. So right now it's on stock speakers and 2 10" MTX subz pushin my subz is a MTX amp that only pushes 500 watts.

I have a Kenwood KDC-7007 in mine with stock speakers (for now, waiting alarm system to be installed to finish my installation) and the sound is well over the Stock HU and the stock speakers sounds good, but lack in high frequency, but have a decent bass...

Don't ask that speakers to push 50Watt of sound they will clip...

If you have little budget for now change HU and then later change speakers, do not change for 40$ a pair, change for something higher quality. If you plan to buy 40$ speakers, keep the stock one... ;-)

Speakers are subjective, meaning find some that you like the sound of!
Most other audio you can purchase based on the specifications, and features, sight unseen and sound unheard.
Speakers are a beast of another color though. In my shop I keep two speakers that on the manufactures frequency response curves look to be exactly the same- but sound as different as night and day! Great way to show friend about the differences in speakers.
The number one criterea in speakers is listen, and find some you like the sound of. If the stock units fit the bill, then you are better off that many folks!! (Second is fit by the way)
The stock is better than some you find out there, they used to be pioneer manufacture, can't say about the .5 upgrades. They are pure paper with very light magnets, and no dedicated tweeters. This would suggest that bass will not go deep without distortion, and the same of high frequencies.
Do watch out on overpowering them, there is a second diaphragm in a speaker know as a spyder, and that is what gets ripped when you "blow" a speaker. The spyder allows back and forth motion of the speaker and interaction of the bobbin on the speaker and the magnet. It hold the bobbin is a very presice position side to side, and when ripped, it will allow the bobbin to physically rub against the magnet, which makes a most unpleasent noise!
The stock can be blown pretty easy by amping them and trying to the notes high and low out of them they were never meant to play.
So if you love the stocks- GREAT! but be careful on playback..

i have the Pioneer DEH-6400 HU and it sounded like 500% better than the crappy stock HU (for pics click on www) i would definatly recommend the DEH7400 HU, it has everything mine does and more!!! 3preouts, HPF, MP3 playback... its all worth it..

This is the second post I have seen recently regarding this HU. The Pioneer DEH-P7400MP DOES not have 3 preouts! It only has 2. The Pioneer Premier version DEH-P740MP has 3 Preouts of the 4V variety. THey both can be had for less than $250 on ebay. Since they are both around the same cost, I would definately recommend the Premier model.

just got a nice silver P5. How the heck am I going to get my awesome Blaupunkt head unit into the dash w/out it looking too ugly? Are there dashkits out there anywhere? Circuit City says there's none. Haven't called Crutchfield yet.

Circuit City does have a dash kit that fits pretty good in there ask them for the universal dash kit. CrutchField also has one that fits exactly into your dash they also have the harness kit for it Circuit city doesnt have that yet.
