Actually, my parents only drive stick and our BMW's never get stuck. Maybe it's because in order to go to reverse, you have to push the sifter all the way to the left, past first gear. My p5, however has the same problem. Even when I put it in neutral, let go of the clutch and break, and start all over again, it'll only go halfway into reverse. Usually on the third try, it'll slip in there. Is there something wrong with my car?
Unless I'm mistaken, BMW has a synchro on reverse. I know Audi does. Also, BMW is RWD, so the gearshift goes straight down into the tranny, not thru a series of linkages, which makes shifts smoother in general.

paragraphs?? Lets start with periods ater the sentences, to signify a new sentence and a new thought. paragraphs can come later, you need to start with the basics...

My '98 Honda Prelude would sometimes not want to go into reverse too. Usually just a quick up-and-down on the clutch pedal would do the trick, like the other guys mentioned.

This topic reminds me of my old VW Scirocco(s) and Rabbits and how screwball thier manuals were. In those, you had to push down on the top of the stick, and then while holding it down, move it into reverse which was forward and to the left of first gear.

Goofy little things, they were.

Yup. My '85 Golf was like that. But my '79 Scirocco had an aftermarket shifter; it had a ring you had to pull up to unlock reverse.
