trouble shifting into reverse, anybody else?
 

My 00' ES is tough to get into reverse. Is this a common problem on these cars?

common on ANY car... there are no synchros in reverse...

I wouldn't be surprised if it says how to deal with it in your owner's manual.

No, I know what your talking about, but this car seems worse than others. Even if I go into 5th first, it doesnt help at all.

Err well they are synchroed but it's cause of being straight cut or whatever (getting the gears to mesh). :)

Don't know why it'd be more problematic than other cars...guess it's just the design.

I OWN A FAIRLY COOL MAZDA PROTEGE 323 00 MODEL I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. IF YOU ARE TRYING TO PUT IT INTO REVERSE WHILE THE CAR ISN'T RUNNING IT IS HARD TO PUT INTO GEAR, IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE TRYING TO PUT IT INTO REVERSE AND IT WONT, DONT JAM IT INTO GEAR, THE EASY THING IS TO REALEASE THE CLUTCH AND PUSH IT BACK IN WHILE PUTTING IT INTO REVERSE, IF IT JAMS JUST DO IT AGAIN YOU WILL GET IT ON THE 1ST OR SECOND GO.

before sliding the lever into reverse, first slide it into 1st, then reverse.

also, if you can slighty roll the car before sliding it into reverse,
that helps too.

you were right the first time. if you have straight cut gears they mesh directly and do not have syncros.

try letting out the clutch then pushing it back in then try reverse again.

notice that when you shift it into reverse the gear itself moves, not a collar like what engages the other gears.

Happens all the time...I don't even notice anymore. Every manual-trans car I've ever had has done it. Let the clutch up (doesn't even have to be all the way) and try again.

If you want REAL excitement, try driving an old car without any synchros at all! Double-clutch for every downshift, and no shifting into 1st until the car's completely stopped. Now that's fun!

my msp does this as well, my 02 lancer also does this, i dunno exactly what cause it, ever notice that you can be in reverse backing up and easily put it in first will still rolling backwards and take off try doing this in first rolling forward and slipping it into reverse it wont let you. you have ot be completely stopped to put the car in reverse, also, mine does that if i park and then turn the car off turn it back on and try to put it in reverse sometimes it wont let me go into gear if i let off the break let it roll just a bit forward or backwards it slipps right into gear everytime. no problem. not really a big issue. just let the car roll a bit and if your on a completely level surface and it wont roll then i guess ur SOL lol j/k pull it back into neutral and push the clutch in while putting pulling it towards reverse it should click in one u hit the give point aka release point for the clutch.

Actually, my parents only drive stick and our BMW's never get stuck. Maybe it's because in order to go to reverse, you have to push the sifter all the way to the left, past first gear. My p5, however has the same problem. Even when I put it in neutral, let go of the clutch and break, and start all over again, it'll only go halfway into reverse. Usually on the third try, it'll slip in there. Is there something wrong with my car?
