The stick on the P5...

Does anybody elses stick wobble at highway cruising speed? So far I am enjoying everything about the car as I am one that looks at details that's pretty good (you know, alignment of body panels, the interior, noises etc..). But I noticed that the stick wobbles to much for my taste. It could be that I've been driving a MX-3 V6 for the past 4 years and rotaries before that. Do 4 cylinders always wobble this much? or is it that the mounts are just softer. My MX-3 didn't even budge and it needed a tuneup bad before i traded it in, I know it was a V6 and they run smoother but it was only a 1.8 litre engine.

Im assuming the "wobbling" you refer to is vibration?

I was kind of surprised by how much more my stickshift moved around and vibrated compared to my previous MT cars when I first got my P5. But it turns out that all my previous cars had cable operated shifters which pretty much isolate the shifter from the machinery up front. Our P5s have direct rod linkages. So it transmits all of the vibration and motor/trans movements to the stick. It doesnt help that the motor mounts on the P5 are a tad on the soft side (watch your shifter as you lift throtte and go into engine breaking...woah!).

At first I viewed this vibration as a lack of refinement, but I just grew to like it. Its just a side effect of giving the shifter a direct link to the drivetrain. Plus it adds to the car's character, you get to feel the car a bit more. After all Im sure that Ferraris do all sorts of things/make all sorts of sounds that would be completely unacceptable in most mass produced cars, but they are still one of the most loved cars in the world, why? because its character.
