Sound Clip of engine rattle

I recorded a sound clip and converted it to an mp3 file so everyone should be able to play it. I recorded it this morning, it was about 30 Degrees Far. and I popped the hood and reved the engine to about 3000rpms 4 or 5 times. Here is a link, let me know if it does not work for anyone.

It sounds like a high-powered lawn mower! Is the engine rattle sound (2) pieces of metal hitting each other? Thats what it sounds like to me. Ive never heard this on my car.

Has anyone seen connection with the people who have this rattle? Are they early production P5s or all?

Yes that's exactly what my **** sounds like in the morning. Its no wonder people stare at me when I'm rolling by first thing in the morning. It sounds like I'm driving a broke down lawn mower or something. HURRY UP MAZDA AND GET A FIX FOR THIS ISSUE!!!!!!!!!

At first people thought it was the heat shield of the exhaust manifold however it is not that. Mazda said something about vtcs plates or something like that but no one is really sure what it is.

OMG! I can definately say that I am 100% totally sure that I do not have that problem.

BTW my car is a canadian model 2001 ES with GT package, 5-speed, took delivery in July of 2001.

Hopefully you guys can get a resolution to this soon.

noise

hey my engine used to rattle before i installed the jap cams. I think it has to do with lack of lubrication on the cams when you first start the motor. I live in florida where its like 80 degrees all the time i doubt temprature has anything to do with this problem although the rattle did go away once the engine was warm. It hasnt made the noise since i swapped the cams . it ticks now but thats because the lobes on my new cams are more aggresive, but not that horrible train like rattle. i used to hate that ****.

My first name is Dustin and I have the same problem too! Maybe that is the corralation.

Let me pose this question though, to those who have the rattle, did you have the oil changed quite early on? I had my first Oil change at 18 miles.

And yes I did take my car to the dealer and sent Mazda Several emails, and all I got was "we didn't hear anything when we drove it around"

BS, if you drove it when it was cold there is no way you can miss that sound.

Sounds like piston slap. Solution: don't accelerate so hard with a cold engine.

On a similar note, my engine is excessively noisy at idle - warm or cold.

I had my first oil change at 3000 miles so I don't think that has anything to do with it. Everything thinks it is something else, and no one knows for sure, i have heard harmonics, valve tap, piston slap, cams, vtcs plates, and several other things. The worst problem is, is the fact that it is almost impossible to duplicate the problem for the dealer because the engine has to be completely cold, not a 1 hour rest but like 4 or 5 hours. I think I will burn a cd and put my sound clip on it so I can play it for my dealer. There is no way I am going to be forced to live with an engine that sounds like that. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Dustin

PS- its nice to see another Dustin on the board, you are only like the 3rd Dustin I have ever been in contact with.

rattle!!!

I hear the same rattle also, but it only does it when the engine is cold, but after about 5 min of driving it's gone, I asked Mazda about it, cause i heard it coming off the lot, and I brought it back the next day, and they know about but there not quite sure what it is. It doesn't bother me that much cause I know it's going to away once the engine gets warm.
