Service intervals

My 24,000 km service interval has arrived. I have spoke with a few people about these, and most say that they are a crock. I was told by my dealer when I purchased the car, that I needed to do the checks in order to keep my warranty valid. Does anyone know for sure? I searched a bit on the forum and did not find any concrete answers. For most of the checks I can do them myself, it is all outlined in the manual.
