Pics and Details of '99-'03 Proteges for a Newbie

Hey everyone,

I'm new in the Protege market and thinking of picking up a used '99-'03 Protege. Just wondering if you can inform me on the differences b/w the models in different years.

I've heard about issues with the EGR valve in the 2.0L models so I'll probably opt for the smaller 1.6L engine (SE model).

Another thing that I'd appreciate is detailed pics of each model from the four years. If anyone knows any sites or links that I could use I'd really appreciate it. Preferably of Proteges without too many mods as the one I'll buy will probably be a regular unmodded model.

Thanks a lot.

Unless you know you will turbo (then the 1.6l is a good choice) - get the 2.0l (the EGR is a small problem).

Underpowered as it is - every lil' bit helps!

ehhh, the 1.6L is more reliable too...

2.0L's have been known to spin a rod bearing for no apparent reason, they have rods like twigs, all kinds of funky engine noises, problems with the VTCS system, egr's known to get clogged(1.6L has NO egr system)

the FS-DE is probably the WORST 4 cyl mazda ever built.

(puts flame suit on)

sorry but it's the truth

I like the ES Protege for 01-03.
It has the 2.0, but i'm over 80,000 with mine, and no problems yet.
I think it has a sharper look than the SE, with it's fog lights, and body colored mirrors, handles and bump guards on the doors.

As well, most ES models will have rims and a spoiler.

Here's 2 pics, the one on the left is my ES 2.0, the right is an SE 1.6.
