Here are a few maintenance items I perform on my vehicles that I often do not see on the maintenance schedule:

Flush and fill brake fluid
Replace transmission fluid and filter (if auto)
Replace PCV valve
Replace fuel filter

When exposed to air, brake fluid absorbs water and becomes less effective. Not much of a problem for a sealed system, but the fluid does degrade. Common recommendation is to replace the fluid every two years. Don't forget to bleed the air out. Less than $5 for this maintenance item!

The clutch packs in an automatic tranmission wear similar to brake pads. Most of the suspended material get caught in the filter and stick to magnets in the trans pan. Regular maintenance can improve your transmission's lifespan temendously. Recommended maintenance - every 50,000 miles. Although I've seen recommendations as high as every 100,000 miles. Don't bother spending the extra cash on synthetic tranny fluid though. It can cause increase slippage. Since they tranny fluid is not exposed to exhaust gasses like engine oil, it's lifespan is considerably longer. I usually pay around $15 for the filter and $15 for the fluid.

I like to replace my PCV valves annually. Fuel economy can be affected by a poorly functioning PCV valve. At $2.50 and less than a minute to replace, this is a cheap and easy maintenance item.

I replace my fuel filters annually as well. I've seen recommendations vary from every 15,000 miles to every 45,000 miles. Oftentimes partially clogged fuel filters will cause engine hesistation. It also puts more of a strain on the fuel pump which can lead to premature failure. In past vehilces, my fuel filter have cost anywhere from $2.50 - $20

The manufacturer's maintenance schedules are often bare minimums so that they can list a low $ amount for annual maintenance. Less $ on maintenance is attractive to many customers, so sales increase. Personally, I don't mind spending a little time and money to keep my vehicles running strong.
