Angry license plate holder P5

Anyone had problems with thier tag holder? That damn thing rattles all the time! I've taken it off, tightened, and no help...very poor design!

Bumps....rattles
Shut it....rattles

I can't imagine what it is like with a decent stereo or sub in the back!

Anyone have any ideas?

thanks all

I have to agree that the design is very very bad. Not only does it have only 2 screws, but when you mount it, it sits at an angle so the bottom half of the holder is dangling in mid-air.

Anyway, I kinda fixed it. What you need to do is to glue some padding material to the back side of the licence plate. I used some thick foam insulation (packaging materials) so that it fills up the gap between the holder and the body (esp the bottom half). I had it done so that the padding material slightly pushes the holder outwards (working against the screws).

It still makes a noise when I close the hatch, but no rattling when going over bumps.

I know it would definitely hold the holder in place if you use some padded double sided tape, but I don't want to stick anything to the body...

Hope this helps

Thanks for the suggestion...

I will play with it some and see...However that sounds like a good plan.

as noted in my signature...I have two P-5's....on mine...the plate holder sits nice and flat and actually snug...no rattle at all..even when you shut the lid.....but on my wifes...it stands off a little...and certainly rattles when you shut the lid...but that is the only time I hear it....and I have driven hers a bit....and I have a tendency to notice EVERY little rattle or noise. :{D

Mine rattles like a byatch too, drives me friggin nutz...very poor design, I might just put some foam behind it or something, cause I agree, it is annoying, especially when closing the trunk!!!

I used 3m outdoor doublesided tape (the red heavy duty stuff). Bought from Home Depot. Cut two pieces to fit the little rubber pad they put on each side of the holder, stacked them up and no rattle since. Going on 7 months. (and its been bloddy cold here!)

I noticed this on a P5 I test drove and on my new P5 that I picked up on Saturday with the plate attached. Major cheap-sounding rattle when I closed the hatch. Upon taking the plate off I noticed that the screws holding the plate to the plate holder were too long, which meant that the plate couldn't be tightened down to the holder enough to prevent it rattling when the hatch was closed. So in my case at least the rattling was because of the license plate not being attached tightly and not because of the holder itself being loose at the bottom. At any rate, I replaced the license plate screws with shorter ones, tightened it up, and the rattle was gone.
