don't forget about us people in canada......alot of us are from canada and are prob like me, would die for a turbo in there P5 or protege ES-GT....i'd ne willing to pay at the most $2000 US cause i still have to pay for installation costs, i'm also concerned about the turbo eating my engine....don't want to buy a new engine after 2 years of using the turbo

When talking about price vs. hp-gains for the turbo kit,
don't forget about the FS-ZE swap which will give you 170HP for what, around $3000-4000 (CDN)?

So if the turbo gives significant advantages over doing an engine swap (more power, bolts on, keeps emissions rating, etc..).. then if it can be kept in the same price range that would be totally fair.

Bonus points for working in a functional hood-scoop

THOR, I would be interested in you just reprogramming my ECU, I have made my own turbo kit taht may or maynot be made into a public kit. I am going to be using an FMU but a reprogrammed ECU wouold be nice. And to what people may think a FMU can be used on the Mazda 2.0L I have seen many post where people said an FMU cannot be used because the FPR is not on the fuel rail however it is! Look on your Vacuum routing chart under your hood or just lok at your fuel rail. An FMU can be used in any car that has a Vacuum ported fuel presure regulator same as how we can use the Zex N2O kit on our cars. If we didn't have that FPR we couldn't even use the Zex kit. I am in the last leg of my kit in welding up the header and making the provision for the EGR tube. My setup is very similar to that of THOR's using a T28 turbo for space savings but I am using an FMU with a TurboXS BOV, custom piping & Header, underhood intercooler with hood scoop, and all the various lines all stainless. If you have any questions THOR I have come pretty knowledgable of the FS engines I don't know nearly everything but I do know a good deal.

Hello Craig, thanks for the reply. We are contemplating offering the ECU as a possible upgrade even for non turbo Proteges with different tuning of course. We are looking at the hood scoop as well and will continue to do testing. Keep the replies coming.

P5 is same exact engine as 2001 ES and LX 2.0 (FSDE), MP3 is also an FSDE, but with retuned exhaust to give it more HP.
Thor, depending on what the final kit comes with, quality, and ease of installation, $3K-$4K would be a reasonable price range. Keep us informed.

Honestly, 3000$ US would be a very fair price for a turbo. Others may be different, but I'd be more then happy with 190hp as long as it's easy to install, and keeps the car running smooth, safe & sound, etc.

If I was paying that much for an upgrade, I wouldn't mind paying a bit more if I had a peace of mind, so think about reliability...

I would pay up to $3k for a turbo. It would be nice to have a very clear installation manual with it and good reliability. CARB approved would be a big deal, particularly for those of us in communist states like California. I think the big brake thing gets faded here because the brakes on the Pro are pretty good stock, but none of us has felt what they are like with the additional power. I would imagine they would be well received when the extra HP arrives, if they were attractive (yellow and/or red powdercoat on the calipers) and did offer higher performance at a fair price. Maybe there will be more demand for that as people get to mileages where they need brake work done (instead of getting the old rotors turned just get a new set of higher performance slotted or drilled rotors). Whover gets to the finish line of this turbo race first is going to make some pretty good scratch!
