compressor surge can sound like that if no venting or bypass is used. what happens is boost hits the TB plate and pushes back against the charge air still working it's way to the TB creating a wave effect. This wave CAN damage the compressor wheel if it's severe enough....i've never seen it actually tear anything up though.
