I am NOT an expert on car stereos, I've been told that the speaker wires and/or internal wiring in the head unit will sometimes pick up radio frequency noise from the car's ignition system, even if the stereo is off. Switching the stereo on (even with the volume turned all the way down) will sometimes change the noise or make it go away. This will tell you that the problem is coming from the stereo.

My old Toyota Camry used to have a whine like this, and turning the stereo on would make it change pitch. However, like I said, I'm not an expert and I have no clue how to fix it

yeh I get that same noise, high pitched whistling/whining sound when i am cruising at 70+ MPH or so on the highway. and at around at cruising rpm.

I have 2000 LX 1.6L Auto.

Wonder what it is ? sounds like air though. but what do i know ?

on the p5 the roff rack is what makes the noise when cruising at 50 + mph.
solution:
take the roof rake off and no noise.

My P5 (2002.5, two weeks old) has the same problem. It really bugged me, so I went to the dealership. Here is what they wrote after three hours test.

TEST DROVE VEHICLE 39 MILES AT SPEEDS FROM 60-80MPH, MAINLY HEARD THE NOISE AROUND 70 MPH. CHECKED ALL WINDOW MOLDINGS, ECT. CHECKED ESI, NO TSB'S LISTED. REMOVED AIR INTAKE SCOOP, REDR OVE, NOISE IS STILL PRESENT. CALLED TECH LINE, THEY HAD UNPOSTED TIP REFERENCE #265893. NORMAL NOISE FROM THE TRANSMISSION, WILL NOT CAUSE ANY DAMAGE. THERE IS NO REPAIR AT THIS TIME.

Well, it sounds strange, but the noise comes from the transmission. They said this kind of problem might be a recall item.
