High pitch engine whine at highway speeds

I have a 2002 P5. At very light throttle cruising at 70-75MPH the engine emitts a gear-like/high pitch whine. if i let off the gas it goes away, if i input more throttle it goes away. its a very high frequency, maybe a vacuum leak or something.

anyone out there notice this?

Thanks, todd

Don't have this problem with my P5.. One question, though. Do you have an automatic or a manual? That may help answer your question.

i know what you are talking about. it sounds almost like a turbo whine. this only occurs at high rpm's tho.

Yes, I've occasionally noticed it too, and my ES is brand new. Not worried about it at all though, since I've heard it on other cars. On my very first car, it was noticeable only when the headlights were on, so I always put that sound down to being the alternator.

Does it make any difference whether the radio is on or off?

I have the same noise on my 99 Protege Automatic.. When I got the car they said it was just a normal sound that they made and not to worry about it. I have drove other 3rd gen Pro automatics and they do the same thing. My car now has 76k on it and has had no problems..So I guess this is just a normal sound that these cars make. I don't know if the manual's do it too but all of the automatics I drove done it..

thanks
Barry

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I do have an automatic (unfortunately, ha ha)

it makes the whine with the radio off.

maybe i will try some Synthetic AFT in the trans and see if if changes it.

I think the radio being on helps drown out that noise.

I get the same noise exactly above 120 km/hr, and it's definately coming from the speakers. I have a cheap pioneer head unit, and stock-wires. My friend says all I need is some noise filter for the head unit.

if you have an amp, i have been taught that the wire that connects to the amp need to be a certain caliber braid to have the greatest resistance to picking up interfereance
