Got my new P5, Problems??

I took delivery of my new 2002 P5 tonight. I just drove it home about 20 kms or 12 miles. I noticed that my gear shift lever vibrates, alot. I can see it shaking especially when sitting at a light in gear with the clutch in. Also I got the rust protection done, the full deal. While driving home I smell rubber burning. I popped the hood when I got home and lots of smoke was coming off the firewall area. Was it just some of the rust protrection burning off? Did I get a lemon?

Greg

from what i know, that vibration is pretty normal, and good feedback of the engine.... but wait and let the car break in then see how it does.....

mine does that too... it just has died down a bit since i got it (i have like 14k miles on her i think)

The vibrations are because the stick is rod actuated, not cable actuated. It is connected directly, unlike a cable where, well, it's attached to a cable.

Smoke from the firewall? I have NO idea what that is....were you riding the clutch or the brakes hard?

The rust protection shouldn't be burning off. If you're talking exterior paint protection, it's just wax, and that wouldn't burn off like that. The rust protection that they spray inside should also be ok I would think. I don't think they spray the engine bay with that stuff.

Best thing would be to see if the smoke continues and if so, immediately call the stealership.

The burning smell is perfectly normal for any new car. A lot of the parts have a special coating applied to protect them from corroding while they are shipped over. This coating burns off in the first week or two of ownership. However, lots of smoke is not common! You should smell it, not see it. If it does it again, take it to the dealership!

The other thing the smell could be is the catalytic converter. I have had ecperience where it takes a little while for the cats to really get hot and "burn them in". I just put the cats back on my Mustang GT and they had the burning smell even though they were not new. Just sat in the attic for 2 years. If that is the smell, it goes away in a couple of days.

they may have accidently sprayed a little rustproofing material on the exhaust or something and it is burning off?
