hey
i just got 17" rims for my protege (4x100) bolt patterns.
the guy at the shop told me to get some lug nuts and mounting/balancing kit???
i dont wanna sound dumb, but whats a balancing and mounting kit???
if anybody could explain it for me it could really help.

I don't know what he means by a balancing and mounting kit but he might be referring to hub adaptor rings. Usually, the centerbore of aftermarket wheels is larger than the hub diameter of your car so that they will fit a variety of different cars. A hub adaptor ring has an inside diameter that fits over your car hub and an outside diameter that fits in the centerbore of your new wheels. This way your wheels are supported by the hubs instead of the lugs. This is known as hubcentric mounting and is much safer and more secure than lugcentric mounting.

As far as balance weights are concerned, they should be affixed to the wheel during the tire mounting process.

With some aftermarket wheels, OEM lugs can't be used because they won't fit. You can buy special tuner lug nuts that will fit any aftermarket wheel. Any decent wheel shop should have what you need for the installation.

Yeah, your rings should have come with the rims when you bought them. Mine did. I also bought the lug nuts, so it all came as a package. You will also need new stem-valves to match your new rims. You can get those cheap at AutoZone. If you do not trust me, then ask Jesse James. Hehehehe. As for balancing, all you need to do is mount the tires, get the adaptor rings, and then take to a shop for balancing. On the balancing machine, they should choose the option that will put the weights only on one side of the wheel (inner that is), so no ugly weights can ruin the look of your rims. Lastly, make sure that those 17"s are not too wide, and your car sits nice over them. Over all, goodluck.
