That's the best advise I've seen on this board yet.

How much money do you have to spend, honestly?
How much horsepower do you want?
What are you going to do with the horsepower?

You may also want to consider learning how to do this work yourself. Paying people to do this will get REAL expensive. At the same time if you don't know anything about the system, then there are those that will suggest you shouldn't have it. And I wouldn't necessarily disagree with that. What are you going to do when the car needs a little adjustment? Pay someone to do it everytime? (Modified cars are always needing something done to them). I would suggest that instead of paying someone to install your first few mods, that you get in a local car club and find someone who is willing to help you learn to install them yourself.

Again I will state that it is a waste of money to invest in the fsze engine when you can get the same power out of your own 2.0L engine's. In 98 the 626 engine does not have a disty so as far as finding one at the junkyard that would match up that would not be hard. Now it may not have a variable intake manifold but a good porting job would give you better flow. I now for a fact after going to the washington auto show that the new 2.0 protege's have the variable intake manifold (vics) so that would leave the difference being the intake cam and the pistons. I would bet that the new pro's would see a great gain in hp with the install of the cam. The cam was made to work with the variable intake manifold. The probeowners have agreed that this is one of, if not the best, mod to do. I would hope that more of you pro owners look into the jspec cam as being a part that you would like to have. Remember that cams are what make a car. Example: Remember the 240sx and the nissan 4cyl pick-up? These two engine were the same, all except the cams. For anyone that has a fsze installed, I would love to see pictures, dynoes, and/or timeslips. I have only known one person that had a fsze and he had some many problems with that he had it taken out and started a turbo project instead. These numbers are from a probe 2.0L that started with less bhp then what your protege's are rated at. This was done with just bolt ons with the same displacement pistons as your car has now.
Power (bhp): 142.00 Torque (lb ft): 153.00
The power is availible in your engine. Dont waste your money on a fsze. Save the money and put a turbo on your engine and if you still have money burning a hole in your pocket buy forged pistons and connecting rods and crank up the boost to 20+ psi and have 300whp kickass car! No turboed fsze would be able to keep up with you and would blow there high compression pistons trying to turn up the boost to hang with you.

Go with turbo cuz turbo sounds cooler and is more trick ;)
Bonus points for hood scoop.
Super bonus points for noticable whistle a la Peugeot WRC
hehe

If you're serious about going NA instead of turbo, then look into more cyliders and boring out that ****. :o

As if i know what i'm talking about anyway.... ;)

The more and more I think about this I wonder if there is not a way to squeeze at least 50-100 more horses out of the fs-ze before I run a turbo or put her on the bottle. The length of time this will take is something I am taking into account. As for the cost of the turbo, it is not so bad if all you get is the turbo assembly itself and work from there. Of course that is probably not the greatest of ideas but it is an option.

The idea of using the FS-DE does not sound bad at all and I am going to look into it before I do the swap in mine. Doing a straight turbo on my factory engine does not sound bad, but I have the 1.6L engine and I wonder how far I can actually push it before I run into problems. If anyone knows where I can get another 1.6L for cheap let me know. Might as well start looking for another one in case I decide to turbo the one I currently have.

www.nadauto.com sells used engine and transmisions for really cheap.....Their page is under construction so you will need to call 'em to get their price and stock list. I got a transmission from them for $275 shipped for my ZC powered civic.
