Engine sounds like a diesel when cold

well, if it isnt the pre-cats being ignited by raw fuel to make the O2 work quicker, then its piston-slap.
i am pretty sure it is fuel being dumped into the cat to warm up the car, tho. if it scares you, get out and use a long handled screwdriver put against the first catalytic convertor, using it like a 'stethescope'. if you hear it 'popping', its just the pre-heating thing.
if the noise sounds like its from the motor, take it to the shop.
on second thought, if it is warrantied, take it to the shop.
