I use Mobil 1 5w30, when I did the change it helped smooth out the engine, but the rattle didn't go away.

I also have a synthetic 5W30 and the rattle remains.

Question ???

I have scheduled a visit to my Mazda dealer for the "rattle" problem. Are they going to blame it on my Bosal exhaust system??? Will that system void the warranty.

lil update...

Just came back from the dealer again today and found that all their cars on the lot have the same rattle, including the new ones. It does have to do with the VCTS and they're still working on the fix.. 18months now. They're trying to recalibrate the engines while maintaining ULEV compliance... reason its taking so long. Many things to go through. Basically the plates that open inside the intake manifold are rattling until expanded by the engines heat. This is from a Mazda Monitoring Unit, one of twenty...

Thumbs down dealer verified

I took mine in and the dealer verified that the problem exists and Mazda is still looking for a fix. No eta on resolution.

Hello all, just joined and. Would like your opinions/feedback here. How reliable is the Proetege ES? From reading this thread and others in this forum, this kinda makes me afraid of buying a Mazda Protege.

Thumbs up

Excellent car for the price! I would buy it over a Toyota or a Honda any day!

Just bought a P5 for my wife (well, we will see who ends up driving it most).. picking it up Tuesday. Anyways, been reading about this 2.0l cold engine rattle stuff in a few threads here with interest. So I will be listening carefully when we pick up the car. As an aside, I drive a 97 Acura EL (the americans here will not recognize that model, but Canadians of course know it an upmarket Civic sedan with Acura badging, sold at Acura stores). Now, I have been 100% happy with my EL but for some reason when I started it today while thinking about this Protage rattle business, I decided to rev it and listen closely, and guess what... a rattle just as has neen desribed here happens about 2500 RPM. Now, my EL is 4 years old, so it may be a vibrating heat shield or whatever, but the point is I never noticed it in the years I owned the car. In any case if I hear anything when picking up the P5 I will report it the dealer service department for notification if/when a fix is available. I'm not too optimistic if this problem has been around with this engine for over 6 months or more as has been mentioned here. If it were fixable with an ECU software change I think it would have been fixed by now.
Maybe not enough people have reported the problem.. what I really don't understand is a few people who complain repeatedly in these forums that they have this problem, but admit they have not reported it to their dealer! If they are serious about wanting it fixed they should properly go on record with the dealer and not accept any answer like 'we don't hear anything'.

I picked up my MP5 Thursday night with 7km on it. I now have over 520km, in three days! Mazda made the protege5 too much fun to drive. The point of all this is that I don't have the engine rattle.

My MP3 has no engine rattle that I have seen I have about 6500 miles on it. If I notice one I will sure have my *** at the dealer for my FIX.
good luck to everyone who has the rattle. Probably no big deal nothing good ol Mazda cant handle.

I have a 2002 DX (US) and I only have 500 Miles...I too hear the engine rattle. So it hasen't been fixed since the 2001 2.0 I have no tach but, it does it on each gear at about 2,500 - 3,000 RPM's

I took mine in but the dealership was not able to fix it. They blamed it on exhaust "resonation". Anyway I called Mazda and there has not been an M-TIPS released for this yet (someone mentioned that earlier and my dealership could not find it either). They have an ETA sometime this month (BS I bet). I talked to Darrell or Darren or something at the Mazda customer care hotline so everyone give him a call and complain until they fix this.

i use Exxon/Esso Superflow 10w-30 & 5w-50 synthetic oil im my Pro5 and it still rattles at 2700rpms.

i think that i too will just disconnect the stupid VCTS9(sic?) and be done with it.
