drop in problems?

You said youve seen lots of problems with drop in oiled filters like the K&N, what kind of problems have you seen? My dad's been running one for years and I got mine a few months back and we've never seen any complications, just better rev response.

oiled filters (K&N specificaly) are made of surgical paper....it's not like a generic paper filter. The filtering element is full of wholes This allows better breathing, but it also allows more trash to get through....to counteract this they add the oil. the problem is that a vehicle that creates a good amount of intake vaccuum is going to suck that oil through the paper element and into the intake tubing.....usually this oil is just burned and discharged from the exhaust but over time it will accumulate on the hotwire of the MAF and cause it not read correctly. This can cause CEL's, impropr idle, hesitation, stumbling, lack of performance, horrible gas mileage, etc...

When I was in the SHO Clubwe had a dyno day where we did nothing but test different intakes and filters. To sum up what we found:

The type of filter is not nearly as important as the condition of the filter.

After making no less than 50 different pulls we found the K&N cars made about 2-3 PEAK hp more than a paper filtered car but the overal area under the curve was smaller and showed an OVERALL loss of 3-5hp....the same intake with a fresh paper filter showed almost no signs of increase, but also no signs of decrease in overall power.

We went into further testing of different intake systems, but thats not relevant to this conversation. I'm just not a K&N (oiled filter) fan....if they were so good Nascar, Indy, GT cars would use them.

Roddimus Prime,

My experience w/ the AEM short ram is the same as yours. I really felt the loss of the low end torque. With just the stock snorkel and filter, I used to be able to chirp tires on second but now hardly anything. But again, with the AEM SRI, you will lose a little at the low end but it makes it up at above 4500rpm. I guess it feels much better when youre merging down the freeway. The engine breathes better and much smoother. I guess the only fix for the lo-mid range power is an AWR 4-2-1 header. I just really wish that there was a way to advance are Ignition timing without changing it to an MP3 chip.

maitai, you have another alternative from the MP3 ECU, check out the Vendor section for the AEM computer, tuner, thingy... and Roddimus, did you ever ask them about the Auto tranny control possibilities of it?

thanks ESPRO!
the only thing with the AEM computer, tuner, thingy is it cost $$$...
I guess it something to consider. I am just so used to w/ my Miatas, timing advance is a free mod that actually works..

No problem, I'm considering the tuner, but you're right, it's $$$!!! I'm going to wait until I get my header, down pipe and cams installed, then see how it feels.

I haven't heard back yet from them about tranny control. I don't think it's even been toyed with yet!! I'm hoping to get a lot more details when I attend the open house on the 8th.
