I agree but no'one wants something that looks pieced together.

milmoejoe August-9th-2004 02:18 PM

I believe i'd spend the extra money to get a kit that complemented the engine bay

for instance, cosmetically, the hiboost vs. wagner-hiboost wins hands down

Roddimus Prime August-9th-2004 02:30 PM

eh, I dont know about that.....but anyway.

the cost difference is HUGE. I had no idea people tried to charge this much for couplers. I've been using the cheap stuff on my pinto and it works fine. I'm talking $60-70 for one coupler (reducer)....thats insane.

Racing Beat August-9th-2004 02:51 PM

yup....i dunno, personally my hood's shut unless I've got a problem or discussing a mod....but if peeps want to pay for car color matching couplers, let em spend the $$....

Roddimus Prime August-9th-2004 03:04 PM

i guess they can just buy them online like I can.... oh well.

milmoejoe August-9th-2004 10:22 PM

How many couplers are we talking about, 6-8?

Roddimus Prime August-9th-2004 10:32 PM

not 100% sure yet as it will depend on how much of the plumbing I can get in one piece. I'd rather have 3 large pipes that require no clamps/silicone/extra weight. I will get a serious count as soon as I get the bracket from Dave.

I'd assuming about 8-10 including 2 reducers.

milmoejoe August-10th-2004 09:22 AM

I think from my prospective I am concerned most about the show aspect of the kit.
In looking at the various turbo'ed mazdas I am most impressed with the hiboosted/(fmic) kit, with the bigger core that fills the entire lower grille.

In addition, I realize the bypass valve setup is more practical from many aspects, but would also like to see an option for a BOV with the kit.

So, do you think the possibility exists, for hehe say a "baller" option....matching or (all black) couplers, bigger core, and BOV setup? I"m definetly game for the extra money (when the time comes), as I never plan to take this to the track, and rarely will I run people on the streets.

Then whats the point? :spank:

milmoejoe August-10th-2004 09:37 AM

Well I've gotten ticketed for street racing on the highway and managed to loose my license for 6 months, and get probation for a year. Not to mention my insurance costs nearly 6 grand a year in addition to all the fines I had associated with the "offense".

So, after at least a year of hell, I now know better.

Plus, after reading and seeing mazda's blow up at the track I have no desire to rag my car like that. I don't believe this engine can take it anyway.

Just my view.

In all honesty I will probably not offer the matched reducers because of the cost of it and the fact I've got so many parts coming in from so many different places. I'm trying to keep everything simple. Also, I'm offered no discount on my plumbing, hoses, clamps, etc.....all of the stuff you can buy at the same price I can. What I will do is probably sell the kit and then if you want send you a link to where I get the reducers from and let you buy the matched ones. Remeber the first rule of designing custom parts...K.I.S. Keep it simple.

Secondly, BOV option.....I want you to really think about this before you do it. I can weld on the bov flange and set it up for you....not a problem. The problem is that you will encounter a lot of driveability stumbles with this supercharger kit and "vent-to-atmosphere" bov. The ecu has already calibrated for that air to be in the intake tract when the throttle body snaps shut. If that air is not there less than a second later when the TB opens back up you're going to run pig-rich until gets more air. Bypass valves are not required on anything under 6psi. from 6psi to 12psi a bypass (recirculating valve) is HIGHLY recommended for tuning purposes and smoothness of driveability. Anything above 14psi (atmospheric pressure or bar) a Bov is fine for. Sadly, the BD-6 in this kit will not make more than 12psi and running 12 psi on that blower will cause more problems with bearing life and belt breakages.

My "baller" kit will come with a GOOD SIZED (properly spec'd for this application, not over-kill) FMIC, the 9psi pulley, new spark plugs and all hoses and clamps needed. I really dont think you guys know how much power 9psi is going to be on this kit. To put into perspective the BD-6 @ 9psi is what Powerdyne uses for it's Corvette's and Cobra's....

I'm going to do all testing on the 6psi kit and then add the fmic to see what gains there are if any. Then I will start working the 9psi kit. :camaro:

I'm in game for one if you can get all that accomplish. :D

Roddimus Prime August-10th-2004 04:52 PM

right now it's looking like....

bolt-on, reliable, no other upgrades, will not blow the motor.......Intercooler is the only thing changing. If you read some of my more current posts on this you'll see why.

p.s. I can get you 200whp for about $1300. On the bottle though but it's still 200whp!

Jliao August-10th-2004 05:23 PM

I've also read on protege5.com that it removes the A/C?

Roddimus Prime August-10th-2004 06:18 PM

you should really read the whole thread.....there's a lot of info to cover!

milmoejoe August-10th-2004 10:06 PM

what numbers are they putting down for their civic kit? at how much boost? intercooled?

Protege_Speed August-10th-2004 11:19 PM

I just saw Tuner Transformation and they just supercharged a Pontiac Sunfire. They used a kit made by RSM Racing. What is interesting about the install is the supercharger is driven by the cam gear. I have a piece of it on video and linked it here. I know it's not much more power but still interesting.

Roddimus Prime August-11th-2004 12:49 AM

oh God, I wouldn't even begin to try that. If they got it to work more power to them. I'm never going to go that route! I can't imagine putting a load on the cam gear that a supercharger would provide.

rktktpaul August-17th-2004 10:35 AM

Wow - go away for awile and look at all that transpires!!!

Awesome Matty - seems like its really coming together!

So now that DaveB is involved, is a set of gauge rings coming with the kit? ;)

Roddimus Prime August-17th-2004 05:16 PM

you know, thats not a bad idea. He said he had about 150 sets of rings left over from his last GB of people not following through like they said they would.

Where ya been Pauly??

rktktpaul August-18th-2004 10:35 AM

Busy here, busy there, out-of town for a while. Nice to be back.

Also got a kick out of how the complementary thread at the other place heated up, lol.

Roddimus Prime August-18th-2004 11:07 AM

ya like that!!

I can't understand why someone who has questions concerning a technical piece as complex as a supercharger system would REFUSE time and time again to ask the guy working on it a question.

I guess it's easier to "hate" on someone elses work behind their back so to speak.

doubters and haters, the lot of them. Going to have to eat some crow when my dyno numbers come out though.....hope they like it.

Racing Beat August-18th-2004 11:58 AM

ahem....hey matty..how about the onle lap of america next year to prove its reliability

Roddimus Prime August-18th-2004 12:41 PM

ah....dude. don't tempt me. I honestly thought about building the suspension and brakes up and driving it out to San Fran to SCC mag and let them pound it on their test courses....I bet it'll smoke the MSP's numbers. Hell, I'm running the same MSP suspension peices with a lot more power and sticker tires!

Rism August-19th-2004 02:13 AM

When is this baby gonna be ready to buy?

It still removes the ac thought right?

Racing Beat August-19th-2004 08:04 AM

Rism, its covered in the thread, but yes, you loose your AC..

Matty, Im all over running the one lap, that'd be awesome, expensive but awesome...

Roddimus Prime August-19th-2004 08:52 AM

Guys, I'm thinking about ending this thread and starting a new one with the new inclusive details about the project. After spending several hours last night working with people I've made some changes and I want to start on a fresh slate and explain everything in detail. The thread will be in 3rd Gen Engine Performance section as it's not ready to be listed in the Vendor section since we haven't done any tuning yet.

Consider this thread closed and keep an eye out for a very lengthy new thread from me in about 30 minutes.

Thanks.
Matty
